CHAPTER TWELVE

Deciding to keep to the riverbank to avoid any more surprises in the forest, meant that they had to negotiate their way carefully around rocks and large boulders, thick with algae and moss. It took two days of back-breaking effort on all their parts, and for several hours they had to move on their hands and knees around the boulder-strewn terrain. It was particularly tricky for Mapi who found the going hard, due to his injured leg. Several times he slipped, landing upon his injury, but with fortitude, he continued; his features contorted in pain. With nerves on edge, they crept closer and closer towards the spot where they were forced to jump into the river. With every unfamiliar noise, Jabuti felt his heart leap into his mouth, fearing that they would meet the cannibals again. Arriving at the place where they had fled, they experienced relief, having survived thus far unscathed. They chose a spot with the defence of a barrier of rocks to shield them as they sought rest.

‘What if they don’t come?’

‘I think they will, Mapi,’ Wanadi said.

‘How do you know?’

‘They are helping the savages for some reason. They will not stray far.’

They took time to refresh themselves in a calm eddy of the river with the roar of the nearby rapids in the background. Invigorated, they sat in the warmth of the sun’s rays drying off and then followed by a quick breakfast. They then took turns in sleeping, with Jabuti taking the first watch.

With no one to talk to, his mind wandered to thoughts of Maru and of how he missed her. Throwing pebbles into the water, he watched them skim the surface and wondered if she was thinking about him as well. Suddenly, he heard voices coming from nearby, and he realised how much he had become distracted. Climbing to the top of a boulder, he spotted the three white men walking to the river to fill up their water containers. He scanned the edge of the forest keenly for signs of the warriors and for a second, he felt nervous that this was merely a ruse meant to lure them from their hiding spot.

Sliding over to his friends he gently woke them up, motioning for them to be quiet with a finger to his pursed lips. They followed him to the vantage point, their eyes widening when they saw what he pointed out to them.

‘What now?’ Mapi whispered.

‘We give them time to enter the forest, then we follow,’ Wanadi said.

‘But they might just return to the cannibals’ camp.’

‘No, they’re setting off for the day. I saw them filling up their water containers, and they have full packs with them,’ Jabuti said.

They sat motionless and waited until Diego and his companions rose from the riverbank and entered the forest. Waiting several moments longer, the three friends gathered up their belongings and pursued them. They soon found their messy trail, which led them deep into the forest on a determined course, to a place known only to the white men.
