Darius said nothing. He walked over and switched the two cremation ovens on. Both Looch and Pete checked the exits as self-preservation kicked in. Charlie saw signs of fear in all of them, including himself.

Darius walked over to Victoria who was still lying on the ground, holding her jaw. She looked up at him but remained silent. She braced herself.

“I specifically warned you about biting anyone other than your feeders, didn’t I? Didn’t I just warn you again about the construction crew?”

“Yes, Darius, you did. I’m very sorry,” said Victoria , with more humility than Darius ever saw in her. She began to cry again as she too knew she was going into the oven.

“If you bite someone, you must be able to take them down and into your complete control. You never realized your strength, Victoria, and now the victim got away,” said Darius.

“I know. I’m sorry, Darius.”

“It’s too late to be sorry, don’t you understand that?” Darius was without sympathy, compassion, empathy or understanding.

She just held her jaw, continued crying, and remained on the floor.

“The kid is tattling on you right now in the hospital and he has the two puncture wounds to back up his story. You’ve never discovered your full strength and it’s too late now, Victoria.”

“I’m sorry, Darius. I promise I will never bite anyone again.”

“It’s too late for apologies, Victoria.” He glared at her. “You won’t get a chance to bite anyone else.” Darius took a slow step towards her.

“Please don’t kill me, Darius. Please give me one more chance.”

“You’ve had your second chance. You bit another kid who had the cops and the ambulance on our tails once before. You were lucky that time ; but instead of learning from that experience, you chose to forget about it.”

Darius walked over to the oven and pressed the button and the oven door slowly opened. The flames were shooting down from the top of the oven. The open door allowed everyone present to hear and feel the intense heat. Darius began to walk slowly towards Victoria.

Charlie knew what was coming. Pete looked faint and Looch was calculating if he could make it to the back door in time to get away if he was next.

Charlie said, “Darius, can I ask you something?”

Darius stopped walking, turned, and looked at Charlie.

“Until we know where the cops are going with this, we may need Victoria to at least say she wasn’t at the bar. I just wanted to throw that out there, Darius, before you made any, you know, final decisions.” Charlie backed up instinctively a few steps as he said it.

Darius stopped and thought a minute. He took a long deep breath. “You may be right.”

He turned back to Victoria. “You have been spared, at least for a few more days, Victoria.”

She cried from relief.

Darius walked over and pressed the button to close and shut off the one cremation oven. He walked over and backhanded Pete and he too fell onto the floor.
