Chapter 6

Thank God, Todd thought as the hero and the heroine fell into each other's arms. It's almost over. Now maybe he could go home.

Years from tonight, if anyone asked him if he'd ever seen the movie he'd just sat through, Todd would truthfully be able to say, "No." He'd been afraid to let himself enjoy the movie because of Jessica, sitting beside him as if she was carved out of ice. They were the only two people in the theater who hadn't laughed through most of the picture.

Todd stifled a sigh. Unable to get into the film, he'd found himself thinking of Elizabeth instead.

So what else is new? Todd wondered as he stretched the leg that had gone to sleep. It was beginning to seem that he would probably spend the rest of his life thinking about Elizabeth. How could he ever stop, when his lips could still feel the smoothness of hers, and his heart could feel nothing but the lack of her love?

The credits began to roll up the screen. Todd stretched, rubbing his neck. His whole body ached from sitting rigid and twisted for so long. He glanced uneasily at Jessica. She'd kept leaning toward him during the movie, which had made him so uncomfortable that he kept edging farther and farther over in his seat. Once she'd even reached for his hand. Luckily he'd been holding the popcorn.

Todd turned to Jessica as the lights came on. "Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all," he said gently.

Jessica shook her head. "Oh, no," she said, "no, I really liked it. I really did. It was very funny."

But when she looked over at him he couldn't help noticing that there were tears in her eyes.

What a jerk I am, Todd scolded himself. How insensitive can I be? Here I am thinking about myself, as usual, and poor Jessica's probably having an even tougher time. I miss Elizabeth so much, but at least she's still alive. I can always hope that things might work out someday. I can still dream. But Jessica can't. Sam is dead, and nothing could ever change that.

Impulsively, he reached out and took her hand. "Why don't I take you home now, Jess?" he asked. He'd never felt very close to Jessica before, but now he was feeling almost brotherly toward her.

Her fingers closed around his. "Home?" she asked. She almost sounded frightened. "Do we have to go home so soon?"

Todd couldn't hide his surprise. She'd seemed so miserable all evening that he assumed she'd be anxious to get home as soon as possible. "It's just that you look really tired," he said quickly. "I thought—"

"Tired?" Jessica's laugh was as sharp as a carving knife. "Tired?"

Her voice was suddenly so low that he had to lean closer to hear her. To his surprise, she smelled just like Elizabeth.

"Don't you understand, Todd?" Jessica was saying. "I don't do anything anymore. I can't think of anyone but Sam." Fresh tears filled her eyes. "This is
