I take a moment to watch the human who has caused Amanda so much grief. He is a tall man, with the sagging jowls that humans tend to achieve with age. His eyes are hard, and the way he looks at his daughter ensures I have to fight the urge to throw him out the window. It is clear that he does not appreciate what he has.
I smile. It will be that much more satisfying when I take it from him.
I follow Amanda into the small room. A woman who must be her mother sits in the corner, purple smudges beneath her eyes. She gives her daughter a small smile, yet does not protest her husband’s treatment of her. A steady beep sounds, and my eyes make their way to the bed, where Amanda is clutching her sister’s hand.
Other than the beep of a machine and the wheeze of air being forced into the female’s lungs, the room is silent.
Amanda has drooped like a flower, and her head lays on the bed as if she has nothing left to fight for.
This is unacceptable.
I stalk forward, my eyes drawn to the female who Amanda would risk everything for. She has dark hair, while Amanda’s hair is fair. Her skin is pale, but it has a slight tint as if she is usually in the sun.
I have a healer on standby, ready to check if her sister can be placed into stasis. I call him, ordering him to come directly to the hospital.
Then I contact Varian.
He gets straight to his point. “Cheryl is beginning to have flashbacks. The healers believe that she may regain more memories as her brain weans itself from the texain.”
Cheryl is the human who was given texain- a mind-control drug. The traitor chose someone from Humans Against Arcav, guaranteeing that her mind would be more susceptible to suggestions that reinforced her belief that Arcav are evil.
“What does she remember?”
“Not much so far. It was definitely a male, but that is not surprising. As soon as the healers give their approval, we will ask her to describe him further. But she did give us one interesting piece of information.”
“Yes?”
“The Arcav had an accomplice. The human woman also remembers one phrase. Apparently, the traitor repeatedly mentioned a new world.”
We are both silent for a moment as I process this. I have seen many things in my life, but one of the most disturbing was just four decades ago, when the leader of a planet named Vaire decided that he did not want to give up power. Vaire was governed by a democracy, and when R’Zantai was voted out by a history-making majority, he boarded a ship. He then let loose a weapon that devastated the planet, leaving it a wasteland, with three-quarters of the population dead.
When he was finally caught for execution, R’Zantai had been raving about creating a new world.
“Do you believe the Arcav traitor has managed to get his hands on a weapon similar to the one used on Vaire?”
Varian frowns.
