There are other cars on the road, but not many. I see Lee and Kimberly in my Holden over and over again — the black bumper a lure ahead. Speed up, only to overtake a freaky-looking guy, then a woman with a cat, then three kids wearing what look like pelts. The sun shifts up in the sky and settles over the road like an oven grill. Abandoned cars are marooned on the verge. I stop and check them for petrol. There’s a bit of clear hose where Ange stores the spare tyre and jack, but when I thread it, most of the tanks blow empty. A little red Mazda bubbles. Suck until the gas touches the tip of my tongue and then let gravity do its thing. One jerry can fills with petrol and most of another. Every bloody time I open the door, Sue jumps over my shoulder, patrols the campervan, and leaps back in, reporting back.

A dead nothing (alive like

Yesterday) no

good to anything. The bugs,

the bugs. The water in the

sky.

‘Can you still smell Kim?’

South.

‘Any more detail on that?’ Closes her eyes.
