Chapter Ten

Miriam waited while her three friends edged past her and stepped out of Hank’s van. She climbed out into the cloying heat and turned as the retired farmer called out to them.

“You said you wanted me to pick you up at the carnival grounds at nine.” He rubbed his fingers against his chin. “Are you sure you don’t want to stay and watch the fireworks?”

When Annie shot a glance at her, Miriam wanted to sigh. She understood more and more how much Caleb wished someone else would step forward to be the settlement’s leader. Somehow, though she didn’t know when or how or why, Miriam had been made the leader of the Spinsters’ Club.

But Annie should understand why Hank was confused. Miriam had become so used to having Hank in their lives that she’d forgotten Hank, as an Englischer, used daylight saving time.

“You’re right, Hank,” she replied, not bothering to explain the simple mistake. “We’re going to want to stay for the fireworks.”

“They’re scheduled for around nine thirty, but sometimes they don’t get started until around ten. I’ll be getting there a little before that to find a good place to watch. There’s a dead-end street close to the carnival grounds. I should be able to find a parking space on it later in the evening. Look for the van after the fireworks. It should be easy to find. I’ll let you know if I have to park somewhere else.” He looked past them. “There’s got to be ten times the number of vehicles in town today than usual.”

And twenty times as many people as she’d ever seen before, Miriam realized as she and her friends crossed at the stoplight so they could stand in front of the library to watch the parade. Or that was where they’d planned to stand. It was obvious between the crowd gathered there and the raised table where two men and a woman were seated, it wouldn’t be a gut place for her and her friends to view the parade.

The handwritten signs on the chairs announced the people at the table were judges. She wasn’t sure what they were going to judge, but she heard spectators talking about floats in the parade.

Annie said, “It was nice of Hank to ask us about staying for the fireworks.”

“Because he wants to watch them, too.” Leanna winked at Miriam.

Her twin made a face. “Why didn’t he say so?”

Miriam shrugged. “Who knows why men do any of the things they do?”

She regretted the words as soon as she spoke them, because the other three women stopped and regarded her with curiosity.

“Is something wrong? I thought you and Eli were getting along well,” said Leanna, ever the romantic. “He and his nephew have been over at your house most evenings, and you invited them to stay with you and Caleb until their house was safe to live in again.”

“You know why they’ve come over in the evening. I’m teaching Eli to read lips.”

Annie tapped her own. “Read my lips.
