Chapter Thirteen

As soon as Amy and Jenna were picked up by their English driver, Harris walked Lindsay to her bedroom. He noticed how pale her face looked. “Lindsay, you need to rest. You’ve had a stressful day in many ways. Is there anything I can get you?”

“I am exhausted, but it’s a good kind of exhaustion. It was a day well spent.” Lindsay gave him a big smile. “Amy and Jenna hugged me before they got in the car with their driver. I wanted to hug them but didn’t know they’d feel about it, so it was nice they made the first move. And they said they’ll pray for me daily.”

“It went well, I think. They definitely connected with you.”

Lindsay nodded. “I’m glad you think so. I could tell they’re interested in you too. It was a wonderful day.”

“I got the impression they’re disappointed in Katie and Roman for keeping the secret from them.” Harris wasn’t going to mention it, but he thought Amy sounded a bit jealous when she heard about Phoebe’s childhood. Was she disappointed Lindsay had kept Phoebe instead of her? To him, it would make sense because Amy wanted more out of life than an eighth-grade education. He was glad it came out how Katie made Lindsay promise never to tell the truth about their birth. But still, it had to hurt that Katie and Roman never told them the truth until they were forced to, and Lindsay hadn’t broken her promise before now.

Once in her bedroom, Lindsay kicked off her shoes and sat on the bed. “Amy and Jenna are going to call me when they get home. I’ll take a nap while they’re making the trip home.”

He fluffed her pillow. “I’ll be in the living room if you need anything.”

“Phoebe left quickly, but that’s nice she wanted to see Haley. I’m sure she’ll be sharing about her Amish sisters. I hope Phoebe can have a strong sister relationship with Amy and Jenna, but it’ll take time.”

“It’s all going to work out for them. They are sensitive and kind daughters. And I’m sure they want their mother to rest. I’ll go check my emails.”

Lindsay touched his arm. “I’m glad you’re here.”

After he left Lindsay’s bedroom, Harris wished Phoebe hadn’t left. It would’ve been nice to chat with her while Lindsay took a nap. What would it have been like to have memories of our daughters as children? He’d seen all the photo albums of Phoebe and some of the schoolwork Lindsay had kept through the years. He’d read the letters from Katie too.

His guilt had been weighing on him ever since he’d received Lindsay’s letter. Or maybe it had happened years ago when he’d rejected a beautiful young woman. He’d taken a lot away from her. She’d tried to reach out to him, but he’d been selfish. Why didn’t he do what his heart told him and return quickly to tell Lindsay that he wouldn’t marry Callie? Ironically, he was twenty-two years old—the same age his daughters were now.
