CHAPTER FOURTEEN

I took Marcus’s mouth against my own as he climaxed in my hand. The tension that held his solid body stiff seemed to exit with his release and only after a moment’s resistance, his mouth and body molded pliantly against mine. The kiss was soft and unhurried and what he said with it were things I knew he couldn’t put into words.

Hunger licked at me, curling low in my belly as I continued to slowly stroke his still hard member. Even though he’d just emptied himself, I knew from experience that it didn’t mean he was done. Usually the first round was just a warm-up. But this time I knew this was all we’d get. All he’d allowed himself to take in a moment of weakness.

How could I ever let you go? Love for the large, stubborn and still-broken shifter in my arms reared up, overwhelming me. How could he not see he was it for me? That what we had was worth fighting for, was worth acknowledging.

The kiss was over all too fast and then he was pushing against me, fighting against where we had ended up. It wasn’t what I had intended when I’d demanded we talk but I wasn’t unhappy about it.

If it seemed that words wouldn’t get through to Marcus—and that looked to be the case—then my next recourse would be different means. Words he could argue against, but this—the way he instinctively responded, the way he couldn’t run as much as he wished he could, the way he was drawn to return to my side—this he could only fight against for so long. Nature had a way of making things whole again. And that was what Marcus and I were. Two halves of a whole.

We might not have been fated mates, but it didn’t mean we weren’t made for each other and what we had was just as rare. That despite what fate might have had planned for us, we had managed to carve a place inside ourselves for each other. That bond—something our shared experiences had sculpted and hardened—was just as strong as fate’s dictate, if not more so.

Reassuring myself with that knowledge, when Marcus broke out of my hold and stepped back, I didn’t resist. His look of dismay and self-recrimination as he glanced at my sticky hand was hard to miss. Walking over to the bedside table, I plucked a tissue from the box and quickly cleaned up. Previously I might have cleaned my fingers in other ways because Marcus’s taste, much like his scent, was potent to me, but I knew he wouldn’t react well to that so I let it go.

I binned the tissues and watched as Marcus quickly pulled back on his clothing. “Do we need to talk about what just happened?” I asked.

“I think you’ve said everything that you should say for tonight,” Marcus replied coldly, annoyance lacing his tone as he did up his fly. He looked down at my front, where my cock was pushing up and out of my new pair of underwear.
