Winding streets, as intricate as patterns on tapestries, threaded their way through the city. The air was filled with a symphony of sounds: melodious chirping of unseen creatures mixed with the laughter of the inhabitants enjoying the end of the cycle.

Mi found himself disappointed that the beauty of Elyricah wasn't working its magic on him and Rah as they walked through the city. Tall, thin trees lined the pathways, their bioluminescent foliage casting a glow on the streets, shining a light on the toll the rite was having on Rah.

The bags under his other half’s eyes were growing darker with each passing cycle, and his jaw had clenched at the mention of Veilla’s progress with Amos. At this point the rite was a game for Veilla, his prize just within reach. Mi knew it would only be a matter of time before he’d have to help crack the mental shield the pilot kept in place.

That's why he had requested Rah's presence. And he figured an evening stroll couldn't do any harm.

"There seems to be something interesting happening back at my suite," Rah said, running his hand through his hair. Its usual lustrous shine was diminished. "I ran into Ellyn on my way here, and he mistook me for you. He told me all about how excited he was to meet Xena later for a walk on the shore."

"Is that so?" Mi nodded as they strolled. Neither of them took in the scenery as it idled past, their concentration on each other, just like it used to before they’d joined Xena's eclectic menagerie.

"I thought watching over them would be a simple task…" Rah muttered. He was clearly struggling with the situation between Xena and Mata. It didn't surprise Mi; those two were trouble, ticking time bombs just waiting to explode and drag everyone around them into a whirlwind of passion and recklessness. It’s one of the reasons they were well-suited. It was also why he himself was so drawn to Xena.

Convincing his other half to join him in figuring out what was going on inside the pilot's head might be a challenge. The barrier wasn’t like the one they could raise and lower at their pleasure; it was solid and unyielding. Just like Amos.

Mi had never come across something like this before. He’d never been one for poking around in another’s mind, the ability still a mystery to him. It was all thanks to his mistress’s — Electrium's, he reminded himself — gift. The knowledge she bestowed on others manifested in different ways. Xena’s inability to peek into the minds of others was evidence of that, cementing his suspicions.

It all depended on the receiver.

Just like mental shields depended on the person erecting them. And from what he knew of Amos, they had their work cut out for them. That shield wouldn’t come down easily, even with his permission.

"It'll get easier, trust me," Mi said. "Maybe it'll help to take your mind off all that?"

Rah arched an eyebrow, a glimmer of interest sparking in his eyes.
