Pain shot through my arm, and I cried out. My eyes wouldn’t open no matter how hard I tried. Where was I? Someone was touching me. I could feel their fingers on the inside of my wrist.

“I’m just taking her pulse.”

“You’re hurting her,” a deep voice growled from a short distance. I knew that voice. Kutzal. That was Kutzal.”

“Ku—” I tried to make my swollen lips move. The pain was nearly unbearable. The fingers keep pressing, pressing. “Kutz—”

“I tried to keep him out, Val,” said another voice I recognized. The braided Drix. “But he’s a surly bastard.”

“I can’t treat her if he’s—”

“You can’t treat her by touching her!” Kutzal roared.

“Kutzal,” I sobbed and opened my eyes a crack to see him wrestling with the braided and mohawked Drix a few feet away from where I lay. I tried to swipe at whoever was touching me, but my arms felt too heavy to move. Weak and helpless, I could only plead for Kutzal from my prone position. “Help.”

“Let go!” Kutzal’s muscles bulged, and he thrust his arms back, dislodging the two Drix holding him. He rushed to my side just as the painful touch stealing my breath abated. He didn’t touch me, only caged me with the wide span of his arms and turned his head to snarl. “I said, you’re hurting her.”

Finally free from pain, I took in my surroundings. The room was fairly plain with a series of cabinets lining the walls, wheeled trays, and a row of cots. I lay on one, a blanket pulled up to my chest. I fingered the cloth to find it was soft and pleasing to the touch. Standing next to my head, staring at me with wide, alarmed eyes, was a human woman wearing a simple pair of pants and a long-sleeved shirt.

A human woman.

I blinked at her, she blinked back before turning her lips up in a tentative smile. “Hello, I’m Val.”

I didn’t know what to say, so I only stared back at her. Why was there a human woman here?

The braided Drix stepped to her side and pushed her slightly behind him as he glared at Kutzal. “Yell at my mate again, and I’ll break your horns off and stab you with them.”

Kutzal bared his teeth. “I’d like to see you try, Sax.”

“Stop,” Val said to her mate. I noticed the matching marks on their wrists. Loks, Kutzal had called them. But I still didn’t understand…

“Why is there a human here?” I whispered.

Kutzal’s expression softened as he looked down at me. “Because many of the warriors here are mated to human females they rescued.”

“There are more…” I lifted my hand to my aching head and took a deep, calming breath. “You didn’t think to tell me that?”

“It didn’t come up.” He sounded petulant.

I squinted at him. “It didn’t come up?”

“It wasn’t like we planned to come here. And then I sort of… forgot.”

“You forgot.”

“Um, excuse me,” Val pushed her mate slightly, but he didn’t budge. He’d stopped glaring at least, and his gaze bounced between Kutzal and me.
