As the seconds ticked away, Tetro’s arms wrapped tightly around my body, holding me close, I felt overwhelmed with relief and awe and something deeper, something I couldn’t quite explain. I felt so safe, so taken care of. After a lifetime of clawing my way through the world on my own, I wanted this moment to last forever.

And even though I knew it was silly, and impossible, my plans for a life outside of Karcerikus no longer included only Andrew and I. Suddenly Tetro was slotted in next to us in my fantasies of escape.

“Tetro,” I began hesitantly, “do you think maybe we might have a chance? You know, being together someday… away from all this?”

I don’t know what I expected. For him to laugh in my face, maybe, and confirm all of my fears about trusting him. Or even for him to just sadly shake his head and say that all we’d ever have was here in Karcerikus—that it would be ridiculous for either of us to expect anything more.

Instead, his eyes softened, as though he’d been asking himself the same questions. Could it be that he’d found answers? Some way for us to leave this place, some hope for us to cling to?

Before he could even open his mouth to respond, there was a sharp knock on the door, sending us both scrambling to our feet. I grabbed my uniform and hid behind a tall shelving unit while Tetro re-fastened his pants, shoving the containers away from the door and opening it.

I peeked around the shelves carefully. A Svanteian jailer named Tou’Kos was on the other side. I recognized him—usually, he worked on Unit Three, but he was sometimes called in to sub for other admins who couldn’t work their normal shifts. Given the fight Tetro had been in, it didn’t surprise me to see Tou’Kos here today. Korkos and his cronies were probably still healing from the beating Tetro had handed them.

“You’ve been in here a long time,” Tou’Kos observed.

“One of the inmates vomited on me,” Tetro lied glibly. “I came to see if I could find something to clean myself off with—guess I lost track of time.”

“Oh really?” Tou’Kos peered into the closet, and I squeezed even more tightly behind the shelves, hoping he wouldn’t see me. “Some of the other admins said they saw a prisoner come in here with you. The human female… designate One-Nine-G-One-One-Five-Nine.”

“I asked her to help me find the sanitizer unit. Then I dismissed her. They must have missed her leaving.”

“Uh-huh.” Tou’Kos nodded, but he sounded unconvinced. “Well, wherever she is, I sure hope she turns up soon. Her brother just got moved to this unit. She’s not gonna want to miss that, believe me.”

I felt a cold lump of foreboding in my chest. From the smugness in his voice, there was clearly something he wasn’t saying, something that had gone wrong. But what?

“She must be around somewhere,” Tetro said curtly. “This is a prison, after all. Not many places for her to go without us knowing about it.
