This somewhat light-hearted example cannot, of course, really make plain the seriousness of the loss of aura, since it still recognizes a distinct difference between “being nature” and “being thought by us to be nature.” What is happening to us is that this very difference is becoming fluid. Through the technical reproducibility of nature, the latter is losing its aura, and is thus being rendered unusable as a cultural value. In our European culture, nature has been a main guideline in orienting ourselves within the cosmos, a foundation stone of our moral awareness and a fixed pole of our legal, social, and political thinking.

I cannot trace here the consequences of the disintegration of the classical concept of nature for all these areas of our culture, and in what follows I shall therefore pick out one important area: that of our awareness of ourselves as human beings. The nature that we are and that we have, has up to now provided a firm starting point for creating this awareness.
