CHAPTER TEN

It was too early to be up, but with Christina’s future happiness at stake, lack of sleep was the least of her worries, and she couldn’t exactly tell Prince Richard to leave her alone for a few hours. Only six more days to remove the ring from her finger, or he’d lose his throne. Unless they didn’t have a full seven days to remove the ring. She had no idea how they counted “one week to wed.” She hoped she didn’t have to find out.

Christina stood in the en suite bathroom with Prince Richard. Someday, she might look back on this situation and laugh. Boy, she hoped so. Stifling a yawn, she held out her arm to him.

With gentle hands, he wrapped an elastic bandage around her left hand and wrist. “How does that feel?”

Much too good. The light caresses of his fingertips against her skin shot sparks up her arm, down her spine, straight to her stomach and beyond. A few minutes more and a fire would ignite.

Uh-oh. That wouldn’t be good.

She pulled away, but he held on to her hand. “It’s fine, Your Highness.”

He secured the wrap and ran his finger along the length of her bandaged hand and wrist. “Is it too tight?”

“No.” Maybe if it were too tight, the lack of circulation would keep the boiling blood from running through her entire body. She stared at her hand. “This will never work.”

“No one will see us.” Prince Richard handed her a pair of sunglasses. “The streets are deserted at this time of the morning. Most people are still in bed.”

Both she and Prince Richard should be in bed, too. Their own beds. Last night’s kiss had turned her into a swooning maiden. At least that was better than a swooning bride.

She glanced at her T-shirt, which proudly proclaimed, I’m with him, and grimaced. “We’ll be recognized.”

“Anyone who sees us will think we are on our honeymoon.” He placed a black baseball cap on his head. “Groom” was embroidered in white script on the front.

Maybe, but… “If we were on our honeymoon, we wouldn’t be up at the crack of dawn.”

Prince Richard smiled. “Not necessarily.”

The glint in his eyes suggested she allow his remark to pass without comment. She picked up her coordinating “Bride” baseball cap and placed it on her head. “Where did you find all this stuff?”

“My mother is overly optimistic. She has several matching hats and shirts for a newlywed couple to wear.”

Under any other circumstances, Christina would have thought that sweet, but not when she was the intended bride.

Prince Richard picked up her sketchbook from a nearby writing desk and stared at it. “You are talented.”

Last night, she had started working on a new drawing to settle her nerves—a cowboy and his horse. The sketch was hardly defined, just a few strokes of her pencil so far, but she appreciated the compliment. “Thanks.”

He set the pad back down. “We must go.”

Her feet felt cemented to the tiled floor. “I have a funny feeling about this.
