CHAPTER TEN
It was too early to be up, but with Christinaâs future happiness at stake, lack of sleep was the least of her worries, and she couldnât exactly tell Prince Richard to leave her alone for a few hours. Only six more days to remove the ring from her finger, or heâd lose his throne. Unless they didnât have a full seven days to remove the ring. She had no idea how they counted âone week to wed.â She hoped she didnât have to find out.
Christina stood in the en suite bathroom with Prince Richard. Someday, she might look back on this situation and laugh. Boy, she hoped so. Stifling a yawn, she held out her arm to him.
With gentle hands, he wrapped an elastic bandage around her left hand and wrist. âHow does that feel?â
Much too good. The light caresses of his fingertips against her skin shot sparks up her arm, down her spine, straight to her stomach and beyond. A few minutes more and a fire would ignite.
Uh-oh. That wouldnât be good.
She pulled away, but he held on to her hand. âItâs fine, Your Highness.â
He secured the wrap and ran his finger along the length of her bandaged hand and wrist. âIs it too tight?â
âNo.â Maybe if it were too tight, the lack of circulation would keep the boiling blood from running through her entire body. She stared at her hand. âThis will never work.â
âNo one will see us.â Prince Richard handed her a pair of sunglasses. âThe streets are deserted at this time of the morning. Most people are still in bed.â
Both she and Prince Richard should be in bed, too. Their own beds. Last nightâs kiss had turned her into a swooning maiden. At least that was better than a swooning bride.
She glanced at her T-shirt, which proudly proclaimed, Iâm with him, and grimaced. âWeâll be recognized.â
âAnyone who sees us will think we are on our honeymoon.â He placed a black baseball cap on his head. âGroomâ was embroidered in white script on the front.
Maybe, but⦠âIf we were on our honeymoon, we wouldnât be up at the crack of dawn.â
Prince Richard smiled. âNot necessarily.â
The glint in his eyes suggested she allow his remark to pass without comment. She picked up her coordinating âBrideâ baseball cap and placed it on her head. âWhere did you find all this stuff?â
âMy mother is overly optimistic. She has several matching hats and shirts for a newlywed couple to wear.â
Under any other circumstances, Christina would have thought that sweet, but not when she was the intended bride.
Prince Richard picked up her sketchbook from a nearby writing desk and stared at it. âYou are talented.â
Last night, she had started working on a new drawing to settle her nervesâa cowboy and his horse. The sketch was hardly defined, just a few strokes of her pencil so far, but she appreciated the compliment. âThanks.â
He set the pad back down. âWe must go.â
Her feet felt cemented to the tiled floor. âI have a funny feeling about this.
