THE BACKSWING

Move the club back with the belly/core.

Starting from a solid foundation and utilizing the prayer grip, feel as if your belly/core (just like in the start to the pivot drill) moves away from the target while you push the club back slightly inside the target line for a short distance with your left hand and forearm. The left hand and wrist remain in a cupped position—the same as they were at address.

The clubhead stays outside the line of the hands on their respective lanes—clubface looks at the ball.

Let your left arm move in and across the bottom of the chest. The clubhead has to stay outside the line of the hands (it does not move outside the target line), and this feel needs to be retained all the way to the top of the backswing. What do I mean when I say the clubhead should stay outside the line of the hands? Picture a running track. The hands move along the smaller inside lane and the clubhead runs along a larger outside lane. In other words, the hands are in, and the clubhead is out. The goal is to make sure that the hands and clubhead stay in their respective lanes as they swing to the top. This important concept is what gives the A Swing its distinct look of a steep shaft plane going back!
