Like bouncing balls on a playground, mandarin oranges at the market add cheerful pops of color to dreary winter days and herald the coming of Chinese New Year. Nature’s perfect “fast food,” mandarin oranges are regularly featured as lunchbox treats, after-school snacks, and even dessert for my family during the bleak winter months. With friends like these, who needs vitamin C supplements?
You may be thinking, “My kids already like oranges. It’s not a new food!” But consider this: Oranges may not be a “challenging” food for your kids but they are a key to the more challenging foods to come. For many families, oranges fall into the safety zone, along with apples and carrots, relied on by parents of picky eaters as one of the only sources of color their kids will eat. Oranges also provide an easy way to start cooking together. The fun of peeling, squeezing, freezing, and blending this juicy fruit is contagious!
What has helped my kids become more willing to try new foods in general is getting into the habit of trying their favorite foods, like mandarin oranges, in lots of different ways, and making the recipes together so that they can feel ownership in what we make. That kind of safe experimentation builds confidence and fosters creativity, which translates into my kids viewing themselves as people who like to cook and try new things. That positive self-image may start at the family table, but it extends into other aspects of their lives as well.
