Add the beef and cook it in the hot oil for about 5 minutes, or until browned. Add the drained beans and the remaining 4 cups water, the beef broth, ham hocks, bay leaf, thyme, rosemary, pepper, and salt; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 1 1⁄2 hours, stirring occasionally and adding more water if necessary.

Remove the bay leaf, ham hocks, and beef; set aside to cool. Remove the meat from the bones, cut it into bite-sized pieces, and stir it into the soup. Discard the bones and bay leaf. Cover and simmer for another 30 minutes, or until the beans and meats are tender. Skim off any fat from the surface of the soup. Stir in the spinach. Heat through and serve.
