My breakfast cereal is gritty and tasteless. But that’s okay, I have a café lunch to come with the Watsons. I check my emails to ensure no cancellations and find a quick confirmation email from Mrs Watson, saying that she’s looking forward to meeting me today. Lovely manners for someone ruining an innocent man’s life.

The shrill cry of the house phone kills my thoughts. Mum gets up to answer it. I put my dish and plastic spoon in the sink and hear Mum stifle a little cry. They’ve found Hayley. I’m too late. I should have tried harder, done more, asked for help.

She comes back into the kitchen with her eyes on me. ‘Dee, I need to tell you something.’

Dad puts down his paper. ‘What’s wrong?’ he asks.

She turns to me. ‘Cookie is dead.’
