Chapter Eight

When Suny left after what went down in my office the night of my grand opening, I tried to go have that talk that I had been dreading. I raced back to my house, only to find out that she had hopped on a plane and went back to Atlanta. I tried reaching out on multiple occasions, and she wasn’t receptive to none of it. She had officially tied my hands; I didn’t know what else I could possibly do to fix this. I had heard from Priest that she came home and ran right back to her man. Shit between us was too far gone at this point. From here on out, the only thing I could offer her was my friendship. If it wasn’t about my seed or my business, I didn’t plan on entertaining it too much.

I was back in the city and was headed to pick my baby up from Luvie so she could spend the weekend with me in Nashville. Deacon had her taking riding lessons for her horse, so I planned on letting her show me what she could do. I pulled up to Luvie and William’s crib, and the truck that I got Boog last year for her birthday was parked in the driveway. I sat there for a few minutes, trying to give myself a pep talk. If my baby wasn’t about to get in the car, I would’ve faced a blunt. Muthafucking Suny just took me to a place every time I saw her ass, and I wasn’t on that type of time today. I made my way up the driveway to the door and knocked. The door opened, and it was William welcoming me in.

“Hey, son, come in and have a seat. Kaia’s not ready yet. Her and Suny just got out of the pool.”

“It’s cool. I can come back and get her later.”

“Nonsense, the time just got away from us. I wanted to speak with you about something anyways.”

“What I do now?”

“Oh, nothing. Our family is getting together this year in Mississippi, and you haven’t been introduced to everyone yet. I wanted to extend the invite and have you accompany the family down so you can meet the other side of Kaia’s family.”

“I don’t know about that, William. Shouldn’t Suny’s boyfriend be the one invited?”

“He’s not family. You are.”

“I’m Kaia’s family, yes, and I appreciate the invite, but I’m going to gracefully decline. Me and your daughter ain’t really kicking it too tough, and I don’t want to cause any confusion with her dude.”

“Well, it’s in September. Your parents will be there if that makes any difference. Let me go find your girls.”

With that, he turned and walked down the hall. A few minutes later, Boog walked from the back.

“My mom is doing her hair. Just give her a couple of minutes.”

“She good. I’m in no rush.”

“What do you have planned for you guys this weekend?”

“A bunch of nothing. I promised to go horseback riding with her. Of course, kick it with Deacon and Dear, but other than that, nothing.
