Seeing Yancy struggling under the weight of the pole, Dan stripped off his shirt and offered to help. In the heat of late afternoon they lashed the four foundation poles together with thongs of buffalo hide and set them upright. When the butt ends were pulled out and evenly spaced, they added the rest of the poles, until there were two dozen. Then they draped them with the hides that bore the intricate scrollwork that Sings In The Forest had learned from her mother and her mother’s mother.

“The door has to face the rising sun,” Yancy explained as he covered the flap with an extra pelt.

With a weight at the bottom, it was self-closing.

Dan marveled at the cleverness of the Comanche dwelling. It was cool in summer, warm in winter, and easily raised or lowered in minutes.

Soon the new tepee had been erected, bringing cries of pleasure from Sings In The Forest and a cluster of her friends. The women’s faces were wreathed in smiles as they admired the handiwork of the foreigners.

“You will sit. I will make you food,” the old woman said.

Yancy’s mouth was already watering at the thought of her fine cooking.

Dan picked up his shirt. “I’m afraid I haven’t worked up the appetite that Yancy has. I’ll leave him to enjoy his meal. He’s earned it.”

Slipping his arms through the sleeves of his shirt, he made his way through the camp, then paused when he reached the heavy undergrowth along the banks of the stream.

The sun had already dipped below the foothills of the Rockies, bathing the land in a soft twilight haze. At first, as Dan peered through the tangle of trees and vines that grew to the water’s edge, he saw only the ripples on the stream. Then, as he stood watching, Morning Light broke the surface and began swimming. When her feet could touch the bottom, she began walking slowly toward shore.

He watched, mesmerized, as her wet dark hair fanned out around her on the water. Her face was upturned, her gaze fastened on the gathering shadows of evening. She had not as yet seen him.

He knew he should walk away and allow her the privacy she sought. But he stood rooted to the spot, unable to turn away from the vision that teased and taunted him as she slowly advanced toward him.

The water swirled around her shoulders, concealing all but the soft swell of her breasts and the darkened cleft between them. He held his breath as she took several more steps, until the water seemed to slip away, revealing her narrow waist, her softly rounded hips, her long, shapely legs. God in heaven. She was the most stunning creature he’d ever seen.

Suddenly he stepped from his place of concealment. She whirled to face him.

On her face was a look of surprise mingled with anger. “You have no right to be here.”

“Don’t you think I know that? This isn’t something I planned. It just happened.”

She began to back up, but he strode forward, unmindful of the water that spilled over his boots.
