CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Skye clambered up the stepladder and fixed the pleated frill of brightly-coloured chintz to the pelmet boards above the casement window.

She was humming as she worked. In the pocket of the overall that covered her dress was a large business-like hammer and a workman-like pair of scissors.

An outside door slammed, vibrating through the tiny room.

A moment later Hector came in.

“Darling!” Skye exclaimed. “You are early, how lovely!”

“I got away as soon as I could,” he replied, “and just managed to catch the right bus. You know it is an invariable rule that it leaves one minute before you get to the stop.”

She turned to clamber down the steps, but he lifted her from the first step into his arms.

He kissed her passionately, her mouth, her eyes and cheeks, then, holding her at arms’ length, he said,

“Let me look at you. Yes, indeed, you look really domesticated. A perfect wife for a tired business man.”

“How did you get on in the laboratory today?” she asked.

“The Chief was delighted with me,” he answered. “I showed him my experiments in the last week and I had a special commendation in front of the whole class. Oh, yes, you can be proud of me, I deserve it,”

“A little praise goes to your head,” Skye said severely, “Come and look at what I have been doing. It is far more important than any amount of bugs.”

She showed him the curtains that she had made and already hung.

“It is a good deal more than that,” Skye answered, “but after all it is worth it. This is our home.”

“Will be,” he corrected, taking up her hand and kissing it.

They had taken the flat in Victoria after two days’ long search, walking, as an exhausted Skye said, some millions of miles before they were satisfied.

Finally, in an old courtyard, they had found what they sought. Originally the rooms over a coach-house, they reached them by climbing a small iron staircase some previous tenant had painted green.

The flat itself enchanted them. There was plenty of light and air and except when the motor cars were being taken in and out of the garage it was completely quiet.

One large room, with an old fireplace, served as a living room and out of it led a large comfortable bedroom, which at the moment was Skye’s alone. Communicating with it was a tiny room, which was Hector’s.

The square hall into which the front door opened would serve as a dining room and there was a kitchen and a bathroom.

“It is perfect,” Skye exclaimed as soon as they saw it.

A few hours later they had signed the lease and taken over the keys.

Once he had fallen in with Skye’s suggestion, Hector lost no time in regrets or anxieties as to the course they were taking.

He believed with her that a love such as they
