The other thing to consider is the tailorâs own perspective. Chances are, they will see you as you really are, misshapen abnormalities and all. And their job is to make you look your best according to their interpretation. You may think you see eye to eye when you say you want a suit that is ânot too slim.â But the difference between your version of slim and that of the tailor might be in the magnitude of inches. Therefore, you need to be as specific as possible when discussing your vision for the suit. Keep in mind, however, that the tailor is looking at you through a lens of years or decades of training and working in a specific style and approach to tailoring.
And so the most important starting point when choosing a tailor is getting to know their style and approach. Look at as many examples of their tailoring as possible. Do their suits have the shoulder shape or the coat length or the lapel width you prefer? Do they hug the body or flow and drape around the chest and legs? Are they light and unstructured or padded and shaped? Choose the tailor whose style best suits your own. If your styles arenât a match, donât try to impose a style on them. Attempting to push them toward a style that is not their own will, in my experience, leads to frustration and disappointment.
Commissioning a custom suit is about self-knowledge. Itâs about getting to know, after many years of experimentation and thought, what your personal style is all about â not to mention asking yourself what you need the suit for and what kind of lifestyle you lead. And finally, understand that a suit will not make you perfect but will, hopefully, make you feel like a better version of yourself.
