Chapter Twenty-nine

Esther’s left foot skated over what felt like a pebble and she was soon falling over her right foot. Large hands tightened around her waist bringing her back on balance. Well, as much balance as could be expected when one was walking and couldn’t see a thing.

“I got you.”

Esther waved her hand in front of her. “That was a forty-five minute ride, Briggs. And twenty minutes in a blindfold? Really?”

It hadn’t seemed like forty-five minutes. They’d discussed BJ and her children, declaring once they got out of the car it would be all about them. But now, she was stumbling in her stiletto shoes. She knew he said dress comfortable, but the heels made her legs look amazing in her designer jeans.

There was a “please be patient” squeeze around her waist when she heard a door open, and then the faint strains of a saxophone playing an instrumental version of LTD’s “Love Ballad.”

Slowly her blindfold was untied, and she stood before the wall-size window in Toledo’s Zoo Aquarium. There was a table set for two with place settings and a centerpiece, cushioned high-backed chairs, and a heater blowing warm air throughout the alcove. When she looked around, there were other heaters sitting in strategic areas on the parameters of the room, and in a corner on a rectangular table sat covered dishes sitting on assorted warming trays. Somehow, the ceiling had been illuminated with twinkling stars and a clear crescent moon. It was too magical for words, only deeds.

Esther turned, and with glistening eyes, she gave Briggs a kiss that had her dizzy with pleasure; parting, they rubbed their cheeks together and sighed as one.

Briggs took her hand in his, swaying to the music as his hand on her waist directed her around the room. She closed her eyes and inhaled his special brand of cologne. And she knew years from now, this memory would still be entwined with that smell. When he spun her, she didn’t even open her eyes, she just went with the flow.

Esther wanted to ask her Heavenly Father to stop time—right now—right away. Just let everything sit and simmer in this perfect moment.

“We should eat now,” Briggs said in a hushed tone.

Esther strained to hear him, but she didn’t mind; his soft-spoken timbre fit the mood.

She moved to the chair and sat after he pulled it out and gently guided her into the seat. She felt so good and was tingling right down to her sanctified toes. Her head rested against the high back of the chair, and the thick cushion she sat on spoke of lush extravagance. She waited as Briggs brought her a plate he removed from a warming tray in the corner.

Esther accepted the plate and looked down in appreciation. “You surprise me, you know.”

Briggs sat across from her and pulled his napkin off his place setting. Shaking it loose and placing it in his lap, he held out his hand. Esther placed hers in his, and he bowed his head and gave the blessing.
