The majority of Vin’s letters emanate from these out-of-the-way parishes. For four decades my father preached the word of God in the second-largest diocese in Australia, maybe the world.

My mind conjured squint-bright landscapes, vast plains of red dirt and little else: scrubby spinifex, eucalypts and native grasses. I imagined a cobalt blue sky capable of swallowing a man, and small towns with locals who may just be able to recall the old Catholic priest, Father Vin Shiel.

I was fine. All was well in my world. Kate and I enjoyed a wonderfully supportive family life and a close-knit network of friends. With minimal assistance from Roy and Bet, I was financially independent. No matter what I was to discover in South Australia, it wasn’t going to change the course of our lives.

However, little did I know that after an Easter Sunday service, standing red-faced in Vin’s humble church in Quorn, everything I hoped to be true about my father was turned on its head. In 1950 Vin had committed to a cataclysmic decision. Nearly seventy years later, I walked onto unexploded ancestral ordnance.
