Day 4 Midmorning

Sandrine walked into her room, closed the door, then sagged onto her bed with relief. This pressure had been building, this weird sensation of everything about to blow. Every time she looked anywhere, it seemed somebody was staring at her, only to turn away. It appeared that everybody wondered about everybody else, and nobody had answers, but the overall suspicion permeated the very air they breathed.

She flopped backward on her bed, closed her eyes, and threw her arm across her face, trying to block out the world and whatever nastiness was going on around her. There was hope, especially with Teegan’s shocking return, but still, there were no answers. Thus everybody felt another attack could happen at any moment. Sandrine had seen the two dogs that had been hurt—one of the two looked like Kosta—and knew from Sydney that Magnus had been injured in the same incident.

Sandrine didn’t even want to ask questions, yet a part of her needed to know just how bad things would get here. Otherwise she wouldn’t have any way of staying safe—though it seemed to be a ludicrous thing to worry about. She was on this secure military base, yet what happened when the actual danger was within the compound itself? As a newcomer, she already sensed that everyone had separated into teams based on their country, a step backward from the international integration that was essentially the point of the whole survival training session here.

The separate teams ate together, worked together, and some played cards together. It was clear that nobody else was really welcome. Everyone was viewed with some level of suspicion, particularly her. She didn’t think that was fair either. She had thought that coming in as one of the few newcomers would have made it easier for her. After all, how could she be complicit with all the madness going on at this military base if she hadn’t even physically been there for any of it? Instead they viewed her with even more suspicion because she seemingly had the ability to come and go.

After a few minutes more on her bed, she realized she would probably be better off going to the clinic, where at least she could see Teegan. She wasn’t sure how to react to the reality that he had been missing all this time. The fact that he was flirting with her a bit and wondering about getting back to where they were kind of floored her. It’s not what she’d expected when she came up here, but then she hadn’t had any expectations and certainly didn’t think she would run into Teegan again.

Having no notion of what to expect here was probably a whole lot better than this mess she was dealing with now. She got up, gave herself a hard talking to, then headed back to the medical clinic. She was supposed to be bringing coffee, but there wasn’t any ready at the moment, so she had taken a few minutes for herself in the privacy of her own room.
