Chapter 17

“Wow, Darcy,” Bingley exclaimed, “I cannot thank you enough for introducing me to Miss Bennet. She is an angel and the most beautiful woman I have ever met.”

Darcy chuckled, “You said that about Miss Carlton and Miss Miller and Miss... I cannot recall who else, there have been so many. You fall in and out of love more often than a lady changes dresses.”

“Well, I know that I have a particular preference of fair-coloured ladies and they were all very beautiful, I admit, but Miss Bennet is certainly superior. She was genteel and easy to speak with and I cannot believe we conversed for over an hour. She has all the qualities that I admire and I have never been so impressed before.” Bingley replied. “I should not mind getting to know her better. She might be the one for me, Darce.”

“Did you not tell me this morning of courting Miss Carlton? You told me you began to call on Miss Carlton two weeks ago and you were serious about her. Only yesterday you asked her for courtship against my advice and you cannot jilt her to pursue another woman, Bingley.” Darcy sternly explained. “You will return your focus to Miss Carlton soon enough, my friend. Forget about Miss Bennet. She may be beautiful but she has no dowry and will be removing to Hertfordshire soon. You will likely not recall her name in a month or two.”

“But Darcy, how could I forget her?” Bingley whined, “She is the one! I know it! Blasted, I should have listened to you instead of asking Miss Carlton for courtship. I blurted it out before I knew what I was saying. I am such a fool.”

Darcy looked at his friend who sat in the carriage in absolute misery and laughed. If he had fallen for Elizabeth, I would have challenged him to a duel. I knew he would match well with Jane Bennet.

“Bingley,” he spoke after giving Bingley some time to mull it over. “Why do you not explain to Miss Carlton that you are called away on business up north and that you will be gone for several months due to an unforeseen circumstance? Explain to her that you were untimely in asking for courtship with the upcoming business travel and apologise profusely that you will be gone so long. You can visit your aunt in York and join me at Pemberley in July to learn more about estate management. I will be at my own estate in October for the quarter and it will be a good experience for you to learn from my father and me before you are ready to lease your own property. You can return in the winter and perhaps the distance of several months will reduce Miss Carlton’s fervency for your affections. At least diminish the strength of her attachment to your four or five thousand a year. She has a dowry of £10,000 and certainly another suitor will court her soon enough.”

Bingley beamed, “That is an excellent idea.
