16 – Arosemena

“Mena! Mena, wait up.”

I paused outside the cafeteria and stood to the side to avoid being ran over by students rushing by on their way in.

Alex leaned against the wall in front of me, smiling big. “You look nice today. Well, you look nice every day, but…you know what I mean.”

I smiled politely, hugging my arms to my body. “Thanks.”

“Did you hear about the Halloween party William’s throwing?”

“Yes, heard it was going to be wild.”

“Probably. They always are. He lives with his uncle and brother. They don’t really care what he does.”

“Really? Wow.” I’d kill for that type of freedom.

“Yeah, so um, are you going? I thought maybe we could go together. As friends.”

I fought down a sigh. I really wished he would stop putting me in these awkward positions. “I can’t. My parents are pretty strict. They’d never let me go to a party like that.”

“Oh.” His shoulders slumped. “That makes sense I guess.”

“Sorry.”

“It’s okay. I understand.” That’s what his mouth said but his sad puppy dog eyes told a different story. “Your friend’s here. I’ll see you later.”

He headed inside the cafeteria and I turned and found Jordin behind me.

“Now him you should date. Not some guy on a motorcycle who talks you into skipping school.”

Throwing my head back, I half sighed, half growled. “Enough, Jordin.”

She’d been giving me crap about playing hooky all week and I was sick of it.

“I’m just saying. Does he even go here? I’ve never seen him before. Oh God, please don’t tell me he goes to Forest Heights.”

I kept my mouth shut. The last thing I was about to tell her was that he was in college. Nor that he lived in the Forest Heights area. I’d never hear the end of it.

I headed inside the cafeteria with her not far behind.

“How do you even know a guy with a motorcycle?” she asked as we sat at our regular table. “How do you know any guy that doesn’t go to CVH? The only places you go are school and… Wait a minute.” A frown crossed her face then she appeared thoughtful.

I inwardly groaned upon realizing she was working it out.

She swung toward me in her seat. “The janitor! Oh my God. Seriously, Mena? That guy? He’s bad news.”

“Stop it. You don’t even know him to say that.”

She scoffed. “I know he almost killed you with that bike then acted like a total douche about it. I know he was an asshole to you for weeks. I know he made you skip school.”

I was in the middle of wishing I hadn’t told her any of that then stopped and rolled my eyes. ‘He didn’t make me do anything. I can think for myself. I chose to go with him. This is why I didn’t want to talk to you about him. You’re so negative. You’re supposed to be my friend.” I began collecting my lunch containers I’d placed on the table, exaggerating my movements to emphasize my irritation.

Jordin grabbed my arm as I went to stand.
