Elliott Smithâs barking like mad. Iâm sitting in the back seat of Aaronâs car, and the dogâs licking my cheek and mouth. âWuh. Easy dâre, dâggie.â Cammy asks, âWhatâs up with your voice?â I shrug. Aaron has perfect hair. Heâs wearing a long beige coat, the kind you only ever see in the movies. Iâm wearing a snowboarding jacket thatâs a bit too small and a bit too worn. I wish I could wear a long coat like his, but it doesnât look very warm. Iâd catch cold, for sure. Anyway, I donât have the money to buy a coat like that. Elliott Smithâs still barking. He runs back and forth from one window to the other, jumping over me each time. My sister shouts at him, âSTOP IT, ELLIOTT, STOP IT!â Aaron turns left and mutters, âFucking idiot.â Another guy just cut him off. Aaronâs cologne is discreet and distinguished. I smell like clementines. Thereâs classical music playing in the car. I say, âWhatâre you lâstening to?â He looks at me in the rearview mirror; he didnât understand my question. My sister repeats it for him. âOh, ahem, Chopin.â ââK.â My sister turns to me and asks how my trip was. I donât know where to start. Iâm about to explain, but she cuts me off, âHowâd it go in Albany?â ââlbâny?â âYeah, Albany? Itâs like the ugliest and trashiest bus station ever!â I remember the bus stopping at one point at a station, but I didnât know it was Albany. âOK.â Iâm exhausted. I donât want to talk for another ten thousand years. My sister can tell from my face and turns to me. âWeâll be there soon. We live in the Upper East Side.â Needless to say, that means nothing to me. I look out at the cars and the passersby. The people donât have necks; in New York, people donât have necks. Thatâs how they protect themselves against the cold. Itâs just as freezing here as it is in Repentigny. Itâs all perfectly normal, nothing exceptional about it. People are breathing, people are talking, people are walking. A fat guy waits for the light to turn green before crossing the street. Heâs carrying a bunch of plastic bags, and I can see his lips moving. It looks like heâs talking to himself. It looks like heâs saying an ancient prayer. We turn the corner and I silently bid him goodbye. I like saying goodbye to people in my head. I often do that when Iâm in the car or on the bus. Sometimes Iâll say, âSmall worldâ out loud. Itâs funny cause most of the people I see in the street Iâll never see again. Elliott Smith is lying on the back seat with his head on my leg. I think about the novel Iâm not able to write, I think about the poems I havenât written for ages. I think Iâm all out of things to say. I think Iâve said all I have to say.
