TAMING A LAIRDâS WILD LADY
Haggis made a slow perusal of the two of them. Disapproval lit his gaze. She could imagine how disheveled she must look. A brief glance down at herself confirmed that her skirt was twisted and her bodice was pulled to one side, though her breasts were covered. Her gaze swung to Gavin; it was worse. His breeches were loose, his hair was sticking out everywhere, thanks to her attentions, and his eyes were wild.
Isla tugged her dress in place and stepped in front of him. She could be angry at Gavin, but honestly, she had been a more than willing participant, and Uncle Haggis wasnât going to blame Gavin for what had happened.
âYer back from hunting.â Isla flipped her hair over her shoulder.
âDonât even start with me, young lady. Yer face is covered in tears, and ye were yellinâ at Campbell here like ye hated his guts.â Haggis crossed his arms over his broad chest, pulling on his horses reins as her did. The horse neighed as though it was agreeing with its master. Few dared disagree with her uncle.
âUncle Haggis. I will deal with Gavinââ
âYe wonât. Not this time. There are lines and youâve crossed them. I wonât tell the rest of yer family, but youâll be proposinâ marriage in the morning.â His gaze met Gavinâs over her shoulder.
âUncle Haggis,â Willâs called as he, Tom and Fergal finally caught up to them.
âWhich one of you egits concocted this night ride and then allowed your sister to go off unchaperoned.â Haggis drew up to his full height.
Will stepped up to his uncle. âUncle Haggis, there was no harm done. Gavin wouldnât do anything toââ
âYes he would, and has, and he will pay for his transgression.â Haggis jabbed his finger in Gavinâs general direction.
âUncle Haggis, he hasnât done anything.â Isla put her hands on her hips. She could be angry with Gavin, and she was, but her Uncle wouldnât browbeat him into marrying her. It wasnât even less appealing than being traded for lumber. Taking a quick glance at Gavinâs tousled appearance, heat began to fill her again. If only he wanted a future the way she did, but she wouldnât be married to a man that didnât want her.
âIsla.â Gavin slipped his arm around her waist. He dropped his head so his nose was buried in her hair. Then he lifted his head back up. âIâll tell her father in the morning that Iâd like her hand in marriage.â
âGood boy,â Haggis said.
At the same moment, Isla screeched, âWhat?â Her husband was going to be a man who didnât want to be married. What did that mean for her future?
Tom let out a whoop. âLetâs toss Angus out tomorrow.â
Will crossed his arms over his chest.
Fergal gave them a grin. âIâve always wanted a sister. After living with you for six months, no one else is going to be able to outride me.â
âThis is ridiculous.â Isla tried to put her hands back on her hips, but Gavinâs arms got in her way.
