Chapter Eight

Tamera’s uncertainty stings a bit, even if I understand why. Rawl’s to my left and an unknown to her. “We’ll need to work on our moves.”

He shifts from one foot to the other. “Yeah. I thought we’d have more time to plan.”

“So did I.” Neither of us looks away from the roster. We’re the only ones still staring at it. Rawl and I are fighting third in line, after Tamera, then a couple of Blendarians. “We’ll have to talk tonight.”

“Are you sure you want to spend your night with me and not her?”

Yes. We need to choreograph our moves, I reply via our innercoms.

“You’re the boss.”

I don’t want to be in charge of this, but Rawl’s my backup, not the lead on this mission. We’ll do everything internally. Cameras are hidden everywhere. They also somehow know I’m an IA officer.

Fine, and thanks for the alert. Tira was able to wipe me from the datalinks. The hacker is still at large.

But at least they didn’t tag you as one of us, I say.

He nods. Exactly. I had nanos for them to pull, due to your briefing. Now, they just want me to be your friend and steal your IA secrets. I smile a little as he continues aloud, “So they feed us nutrient bars and fruit but expect us to fight like animals? How?”

“I don’t know except hunger makes the Blends angry.”

“Me too, and I’m pure Gharian.” We’ll need to be doing something more than staring at the display while we work out who does what tomorrow.

I nod before remembering my emotional dampers. True. Let’s walk around the perimeter until mealtime.

Rawl nods as I lead the way. He begins, Tira mentioned to me how you accidentally killed someone here. What happened?

She didn’t show you the report? I glance at him, and he shakes his head. I hit him in the throat out of habit from training. Not hard enough to kill but enough to stop his harassing Tamera.

Were you furious?

I don’t want to admit to anger during an altercation with a civilian, yet want to be honest. Yes, but compartmentalized it. If I hit you that hard, you’d laugh at me.

Rawl looks at me as we turn a corner near the food dispenser. Tira has your data?

I nod. It was the first thing I did after the incident.

Maybe the lack of protein left him weak.

Thanks to the dampers, I don’t laugh but want to anyway. Probably. I know I’m hurting.

You’ve been here how many days?

Three days too long. You’ll see. I don’t know how Tamera and the others don’t go insane from the boredom. We’re at the far end when the dinner tone begins.

“What now?” Rawl asks.

“Last call for food.” I watch as Sleem comes out from the hallway first. He’s wrapped up in a blanket and followed by a few of the others. Finally, Tamera emerges. I’d like to stop and watch her but don’t hesitate in my step.

“I can see why you like her. She’s pretty.”

“I think so.”

Does our fearless leader know you’ve bonded with her?

That obvious? I ask.
