Startled, I rise in bed, feeling cold sweat drip down my temple despite the hot temperature and humidity in the lair. I must have fallen asleep. My mind relaxed. And because of that, now I’m thinking about Brady. Tanner. My stepfather. The man who let others touch me because he… I don’t want to think about it and scrub a hand down my face. God, there’s so much Taylis doesn’t know about me. He knows some, but I bet he’d never call me a foolish human if he had to go through half the shit I went through.

I glance down at the sheets and shove them away, hating that they smell like sex. It’s nauseating now. I need to get away, and quickly rise to my feet and shuffle towards the opening until I collide right with a broad, blue chest.

“Alaska.” It’s Taylis. His golden eyes are wide with shock. “What is—”

“Amy,” I mutter, shaking my head.

“Huh?”

“My name isn’t Alaska, you know. It’s Amy.”

He seems more perplexed than ever, going to reach for my shoulders, but I stumble back into the lair, collapsing on the end of his bed.

“What is wrong? Please. You are speaking nonsense. You are sweating. Did you have another night terror?”

“No.” The lie instantly flows from my lips, and I’m not about to take it back.

“Lies.” Without asking permission, Taylis advances on me with a hungry look in his eyes. Almost predatorial. I back away until I smack into the headboard, and Taylis holds up a hand. “I’m not going to hurt you. What is wrong? Seriously? Amy?”

My eyes dart upward at the sound of my old name. And I realize… almost instantaneously, that I don’t want that name any longer. It’s too painful. Just hearing it uttered by Taylis makes me shiver. “D-don’t,” I say in a trembling voice. “I… I made a mistake.”

“You said that was your name?” He still seems confused. His eyes seared into mine. “Amy—”

“NO!” I bellow. “I don’t want to be called that! I’m Alaska! Alaska!”

“All right,” he rumbles over me. “Alaska.”

“I’m Alaska… not Amy.” I pull my knees up to my chest, and rock slowly, trying to push the memories of Tanner and Brady out of my mind. But they’re here now. Leering. Laughing. The rattle of ice cubes rings as freshly in my ears as church bells on a Sunday. “Not Amy,” I say, looking up at Taylis as he moves closer. “Not Amy.”

“Not Amy,” he repeats, low and soft as he cautiously approaches.

“Not Amy.”

“Not Amy,” he says again.

“Not anymore.”

“Not to me.” He slowly settles down on the bed beside me. “You’ve never been Amy. You are Alaska. Always have been. Always will be.”

“Arizona gave me that name,” I explain, sounding rushed and frenzied even in my ears. “It was to help me start over. I don’t know why I said Amy.” I shake my head hard. “I don’t want to be Amy. I’m Alaska.”

“You’re Alaska.” His voice drops to a lower decibel, and I feel his lips press against my hair.
