If you don’t share a living space: • “I know you’ve been going through a really bad patch. When that happens to me, I find myself falling behind on a lot of chores, and once they pile up, it’s even more difficult to tackle them. How about I tackle one of them with you? It’ll get one monkey off your back and maybe give you the momentum to tackle another one. I could get together with you on Saturday and we could split a pizza afterward.”
• “I get the feeling you’re getting overwhelmed lately. Maybe we could work out a deal. I help you get caught up on some things you haven’t been able to get to, and sometime down the road you help me clean out a closet. I find that chore so overwhelming I can avoid it for years.”
• “You know about the working woman’s wish, that she could have a ‘wife’ to do all the daily chores? Pick up laundry. Shop for groceries. Cater dinner. Or the handyman businesses that bill themselves as a pitch-in ‘husband’? Fix the leak. Build the shelves. Clean the carpets. Well, I’m offering to be that kind of ‘wife’ or ‘husband’ on a onetime basis as long as it’s a chore I know how to do. This is a limited offer, so you’d better grab it now. Which one’s been bugging you the most?”
• “You know, I could pitch in when you can’t be in two places at once. I’ll go to Joey’s soccer practice while you’re at Billy’s tuba lesson, or do Lakeisha’s car pool so you can fit in a doctor’s appointment.”
• “We haven’t been able to get together lately and things are so busy. Would you be insulted if I suggested going grocery shopping together? Even if you don’t need anything, I would love your company.”
• “I know you’ve been having trouble getting going on things. I could be your ‘nudge’ factor. Call you, remind you, walk you through the steps. I’ve been ‘nudged,’ too, and there were times it really helped me.”
