Here again, a distinction is made between urban and rural speakers: rural speakers are more likely to say skraight for straight and skream for stream, differentiating some rural communities from their urban counterparts. Even as the distinction between urban and rural speech is lessened for some young rural African Americans, there remains a noticeable difference in the speech of these groups.

Another insight from the study of these rural communities relates to the history of African American English. The origin and early development of African American English had been hotly contested by linguists for a half century now, but speech data from North Carolina’s diverse rural communities help resolve some of this mystery. After briefly reviewing some of the distinctive features that are associated with contemporary vernacular African American English, we consider the rural and urban status of African American speech.
