Chapter Four

Maze stepped out of the shadows in front of the group of witches who still surrounded Shanoai. The woman still held her own, but he knew for a fact that the witches were not bringing their full strength. But something about the Seer made him think she was holding back as well. Either way, they were in a standoff that wouldn’t end peacefully.

“Your leader is lost in the shadows.” He announced in a singsong tune, calling their attention to him. “It may take you a while to find her. I’d give you a hint about where she is, but without a shadow walker to help you get there, it really wouldn’t matter.”

“Where is she?” Jene, a young guard who had recently earned their first tattoo from Galari, stepped forward. They had a small red afro and two slits in each of their eyebrows, one dyed yellow, the other blue.

“Those tattoos really go to your heads, don’t they?” He wagged his finger. “That’s for you to find out.” Maze stepped back into the shadows, reappearing behind Shanoai. He pulled her into the shadows.

When they left the darkness again, they were in the temple that stood five miles south of the Eternal Garden. It wouldn’t be long before the guards figured out where they’d gone and sent others to handle the issue.

“We have to act quickly.” He said as he paced the floor.

“Are you sure we’re in the right place?” Shanoai caught her breath as she took in the new space.

The temple was where their people worshipped the goddess and paid tribute to their ancestral spirits. Shaped in an octagon, and with constellations of the sky moving across the floor, it was one of the strongest places in Moon Hollow.

“Yes, at least I hope so.” Maze continued, looking for something he didn’t explain. “I think she’s beneath the floors.”

“Beneath the floor?”

“Yes, Tenia said Zanissa will rot alongside her father.”

“And they buried her father under your temple? Isn’t that a bit, strange?” She frowned.

“Yes, it is, but it makes sense.” He stopped and looked at her. “Look, I never told Zanissa, but I’m pretty sure this is where her father is kept. Not long after he disappeared, I overheard my mother talking to one of her friends. You know, the friends she would never introduce to me. Well, she told him she sensed this surge in power at the temple, right after he vanished. Of course, this was before we knew Galari had anything to do with it. It was over a year later that she would address his disappearance and present it as a punishment from the goddess.”

“So he’s here?” She asked.

“My mother said something about the center stones. I think she was talking about the floor panels. I was eavesdropping, so it wasn’t like I could just go up to her and ask her for clarification.” He huffed. “Hell, I’d gotten beat for a lot less than that.”

“This would be somewhere difficult to enter, right?” She thought about their situation and held her hands out in front of her as if feeling the energy of the room.
