The Songbird’s Key

One

Maze appeared again outside of the wall of Moon Hallow where Shaw and Shanoai waited for him. Dirt and grime from the dungeons beneath Moon Hallow where he left his victim. Refusing to let the Cisk get away, he stored him in the one place he knew no one would ever be able to find him.

“Where did you put him?” Shaw asked, handing Maze his jacket.

“Same place you found me. It will be some time before anyone realizes he’s there. Might actually mess with his mind a little considering there isn’t anyone checking the empty cells.” The thin man gave a bow and laughed.

“You didn’t.” Shaw frowned.

“Yes, I left him in the shadows.” Maze smirked. “Genius right? It will definitely buy us some time so any judgment you may have swimming through your mind right now, keep it to yourself.”

“How long do you think it will take for someone to find him?” Shanoai asked, looking back at the gate. Still not one of Moon Hollow’s guards had come to investigate the commotion outside their home. Literal bloodshed and not one witch thought it important enough to intervene.

“I’m not sure. Not all the guards can walk the shadows. It will take a shadow walker to even sense his presence. Eventually, one will find him.” Maze followed Shanoai’s gaze to the gate. “Tenia has her minions patrol the shadows from time to time.”

“And why has no one shown up here? Not as if we were fighting in the shadows here.” Shanoai lifted a knife from one of the fallen Cisks and slipped it in the sheath at her hip.

“My people are cowards.” Maze said. “We’re finding out a lot of people are.”

“Wait a minute. Did you say you left them in the shadows? Are you serious?” Shanoai asked with a buzz of excitement. “You can actually just leave someone in shadows? I never considered what that would be like. Trapped in the endless darkness with no way to get out.”

“Yes, unfortunately, if a shadow walker leads you in, that’s the only way you’re coming back out.” Maze confirmed. “And from the few times I’ve seen it done, it really jacks up the mind. If you think it’s too cruel, I can go remove them.”

“No, leave them there. We need as much time on our side as we can get. Not exactly like they were an angel. They turned their back on their people to support something dark. So, what, they’ll need a little therapy when they come out. It will be fine.” Shanoai turned her back on the gate.

“More like shock therapy.” Shaw laughed.

“What’s our next move?” Maze asked as he dust the dirt from his pants. “We can’t stay here. Not with the Cisks making a move. And I’m sure Tenia has her people paying close attention to us even if they aren’t bold enough to come out here and face us. If we stay here, it won’t be long until we have someone unwanted breathing down our necks.”

“You’re right, we need to get away from here.
