The Peacekeeper’s Promise

One

They rode the shadows from Dragonia all the way back to the frozen mountain ranges where The Last Keep stood. In the coldest place in Novia, the peacekeepers were safe from intruders. Stepping out of the darkness, Maze looked up at the fortress and huffed.

“Woah.” Maze looked up at the tall stone wall that shut out the rest of the world. “This has to be one of the last places I ever thought I would see in person.”

“Not exactly a chosen stop on the tourist guides.” Shaw shook off the weird feeling walking through shadows left him with.

“Have you figured out what you’re going to tell them about me yet?” Maze shuddered from the extreme drop in temperature and rubbed his hands over his arms, trying to warm up. “I know they aren’t expecting you to return home with a guest.”

“They know about you. I told them I would recruit the help of a shadow walker.” Shaw scratched his chin. “But you’re right, they won’t be expecting me to bring you back here. Your presence alone will alert the others that something is wrong.”

“A guest automatically means something is wrong?” Maze rubbed his hands together and blew on them for warmth. “I mean, do you guys ever bring anyone back here who isn’t already a Peacekeeper?”

“Not anyone we expect to go free again.” Shaw teased with a crooked smile.

“Should I step my ass back into the shadows?” Maze pointed over his shoulder at the retreating darkness. “Is it too late for me to change my mind about this?”

“You’re safe here.” Shaw reassured him with a chuckle. “It’s unusual, but I will vouch for you. As long as I do, they won’t touch you. I’ll make sure of that.”

“That’s comforting.” He looked at the wall. It was brick solid and stood around the entire border of their territory. “So, how do we get in? Are we meant to climb up there? I’ve seen a lot of border walls, all magically delicious, but typically you can tell where the entrance is. I can’t even see the top of this damn thing.”

“Nothing that dramatic. There is a doorway, it’s just hidden really well. They’ll open the gates after I signal them to do so.” Shaw gave Maze a serious look. “All jokes aside, this is your last chance to turn back, Maze.”

“Do what you need to do so we can get out of this cold please.” Maze brushed off the offer. “I’d like to not freeze my balls off out here.”

Shaw reached into the front pocket of his jacket and took out a small white whistle. He placed the tool between his lips and blew on it, but it made no sound. A few moments later, the snow shifted on the barrier wall and the center of the wall split open to reveal a small path that led into the city.

“How did you do that?” Maze looked confused.

“There is a receiver in the tower.”

“This reminds me of all of those anime movies that the Zanissa’s dad used to bring back from Earth.
