Chapter 8
LIVING WITH BROKENNESS
I am embarrassed to remember life without
her wisdom. I have hidden myself in her.
DAYS HAVE PASSED. YOU LIE IN THE ARMS OF BROKENNESS, spent by your weeping and the pain you have suffered.
âDo you understand what happened to bring you to these terrible days?â Brokenness questions you quietly.
âI disobeyed God,â you respond weakly but quickly, a sure sign that Brokenness is truly being planted in your heart. You are not surprised that Brokenness should ask such a question. In truth, you are beginning to understand that these questions serve to check your spirit and to confirm your willingness to be honest when they expose something in you that you may have ignored.
âYes, you disobeyed God,â Brokenness affirms, âbut you have disobeyed God in the past without coming to this crossroads. Do you understand what was different about this experience?â
You look intently into the eyes of Brokenness, trying to understand what she is asking. You have no doubt that you have sinned greatly, but Brokenness seems to be looking for something far more basic than the details of your sin.
Brokenness leans closer. âDo you remember the days when we were good friends?â You nod, although the memory of that long-ago time is dim and unclear. âSometimes we talked for hours,â Brokenness reminds you, âand you were so quick to respond to my counsel. Even when we didnât have much time to talk, I had only to look at you, or to touch you lightly on the shoulder, and you quickly acknowledged my presence and turned to embrace me. Your heart was soft and pliable. You had no greater pleasure than hearing and obeying the voice of your Lord. Time and time again you were free to confess your sin, to acknowledge your humanity, and to desperately embrace your Lord, who is always ready to forgive, empower, and guide.
âThen came the day when you stopped fighting. You allowed the invader of your humanity, that old devil, to reestablish his control in your life. For a time you tried to live under his authority and the authority of the Lord Jesusâacting one way at church and another way at home, one way in private and another way in public. You tried to put on the nature of Christ when it suited you and to hide it whenever you preferred to act on your own authority, or that of your enemy.
âI tried so hard to show you the change in your heart, but you were not willing to hear me. You would not believe that you were changing your lifestyle, setting aside your Lordâs choice to follow your own. You would not admit, or even see, that you were again trying to rule your life. Nevertheless, that is what happened.
âIn the beginning, when your inclination to choose your own way began to increase, I tried to remind you that you had made Jesus the Lord of your life. Each time you started to take control, I whispered, âYou have nothing to hold on to.
