His first win in a Kansas City uniform came in the place where he’d end up being most comfortable: Kauffman Stadium. It was on August 10 against Detroit in a complete-game shutout, as he gave up only four hits, didn’t allow a walk, and struck out eight. That would be his best performance until Game 2 of the World Series. In fact, Cueto struggled mightily throughout the rest of the regular season and into the postseason. He beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on August 15 but then lost his next five decisions and six out of seven. His regular season record with the Royals was 4–7.

Let’s face it, though. The Royals didn’t get Cueto for how he’d help during the regular season. So there wasn’t a lot of panic.

“When pitchers go in slumps, it’s a lot of things going wrong all at once,” Yost said. “Sometimes he is making good pitches that are eight inches off the plate, and they’re getting hit. Sometimes there are good pitches that become broken-bat hits or bloopers. It just happens. You get unlucky. I’d rather have it happen now than in October.”
