"Hey, Liz!" Jeffrey French called, hurrying to catch up with Elizabeth as she crossed the emerald lawn of Sweet Valley High toward the shade of a large tree.
Elizabeth felt her cheeks burn as she remembered what Jenny had told her about Jeffrey and Lila. Irrational as it seemed, she didn't want to talk to Jeffrey. Why had he bothered to give her the impression he'd try to go to the game the night before if he had intended to go dancing with Lila and Jessica all along?
"I was hoping I could convince you to have lunch with me," Jeffrey said, slightly out of breath from jogging.
Elizabeth looked briefly up into his friendly green eyes and glanced away again. "I've got some reading to do," she said coolly, sitting down on the soft grass under the tree.
Jeffrey crouched down beside her. "You sound mad," he observed. There was a tone of concern in his voice. "Have I done something to bug you?"
Elizabeth blinked. She wasn't used to guys who were as forthright as Jeffrey. She had just assumed he'd go away.
"I'm not mad," she said simply, avoiding his penetrating gaze.
"Come on," Jeffrey said lightly. He put his hand on her arm, and Elizabeth reddened. His hand was so warm!
"Well, I have to admit I was kind of surprised when my cousin told me she'd spent the evening with you at the Beach Disco," Elizabeth said finally. "I thought you were planning on going to the volleyball game to meet Enid."
"And I thought you were going to be with your cousin," Jeffrey said.
Elizabeth swallowed. "But Iâ"
"You said you couldn't go to the game because you had promised to do something with Jenny," Jeffrey cut in. "So it seems to me that if anyone around here has a right to be madâ"
Elizabeth stared at him, completely confused. "WellâI mean, I guess . . ."
Jeffrey shook his head. "You Wakefield twins," he said with mock severity. "Don't you think things are confusing enough for a guy as it is?"
Elizabeth gulped. Something in the tone of Jeffrey's voice. . . . It wasn't possible that he'd gone to the disco just because she'd said she was going to be with Jenny, was it?
"Did Lila ask you to go to the Beach Disco last night?" she blurted out at last.
Jeffrey smiled. "Yes. She and Jessica said they were taking Jenny there. They wanted to show her around. I just assumed if Jenny was going, you'd be going, too."
Elizabeth felt distinctly uncomfortable. Unless she was reading the situation wrong, it sounded as though Jeffrey were trying to hint that he'd made his mind up because of her.
She couldn't believe a mix-up like this could have happened! Jeffrey wasn't supposed to be interested in her. He was supposed to be interested in Enid!
And what kind of best friend, she wondered, would promise to fix her friend up with a fabulous new guyâand then steal him for herself?
"Liz, I've got to think of some way to get Jeffrey to notice me," Enid moaned.
