Chapter Seven

Tony sighed. He wanted to stretch out on the bed with Jake and never leave the room. Sooner or later, someone would come looking for them. He sat up and tugged Jake to his feet.

“Did I mess something up?” Jake wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “I’m sorry.”

“Nothing to be sorry for.” Tony wound his arms around Jake. “I’m realizing how good this feels. I haven’t had someone to share my life with in a while. I like it.”

“Cool.” Jake grinned. He kissed Tony’s neck then wriggled from his embrace. “We should go downstairs. I bet the rest of the family wonders where we are.”

“Darlene knows me and probably isn’t worried.” Tony nodded to the door. “But let’s go.” He followed Jake to the ground floor. When they reached the living room, Darlene and Wes were in front of the couch. He could’ve sworn he heard them talking, but the moment she spotted him and Jake, she pressed her lips together and smiled.

“Are we interrupting something?” Tony asked.

“No.” She blushed. “I was about to hit the sack. I’m full and worn out.”

Wes rushed past Jake and Tony without saying a word.

“He’s…being a teenager.” She sighed. “I’m always thankful I had him, but some days, I wonder what he’s thinking. All hormones and attitude.”

“Why don’t you two talk? I’ll get Jake something to eat then I’ll try to talk to hormone kid,” Tony said.

“Where’s the kitchen? I can get my own.” Jake clasped his hands together. A lock of his dark hair had slipped from the elastic and drooped over his forehead.

“I’ll give you the tour since Tony’s busy.” Darlene winked. “We’ll be fine.”

Tony bit back a grin. He might have commanded the room when he was at the club, but not at the house. Darlene ruled, and he rather liked not having to be in control. He wiped his hands on his jeans legs and ascended the stairs again. When he reached Wes’s closed door, he knocked.

“Wes?”

“Go away,” came the reply from behind the door.

“Open up. I’m not going away until I get some answers.” Not the most civil way to deal with the teen, but Tony didn’t exactly have lots of experience with teenagers. When the door opened, Wes glared at him. Tony leaned against the doorframe. “Want to tell me why you’re upset?”

“No,” Wes snapped. He grasped the door handle.

Tony placed his foot at the corner of the threshold to block the door. “You can’t be mouthing off to your mother.”

Wes’ eyes widened. “How’d you know?”

“I can figure it out. The hushed voices. Both of you looking like you’ve sucked lemons. Oh, and she might have told me.” He’d lied, but if the tactic worked to get Wes to open up, fine.

“Just…leave me alone.” Wes averted his gaze. He let go of the handle but didn’t leave his spot.

“No.” Now, it was time to grab back control. “Talk to me. I’m not going anywhere—or is that the problem? You want me to get out of here?”

Wes tipped his gaze and glared at Tony once more.
