I woke up with Piper in my arms. It was like she’d always belonged there, and I couldn’t imagine a bed more comfortable or cozy than that hard floor in the cargo hold. All because she was with me. Though, I winced when I realized I should have moved her to a proper bed.

As we slept, my mind had shifted. Maybe that had happened the moment I saw her, I couldn’t tell. Either way, the compulsion that I had to take her home, to do the right thing for her, roared through me in a way I couldn’t ignore. So much had changed, and I still had so much to do.

My chest itched as a new set of words scrolled its way over my heart, marking another milestone. I watched it happen, smiling at the memory of Piper writhing beneath me. The tattoos were important, marking life events and personal struggles. Last night I had been so taken with Piper, so enraptured with pleasing her and everything I was experiencing, that I’d chosen to ignore the instinctual part of me that said this was one of those moments.

Now, as I gazed at the beautiful new tattoo, I felt almost stupid for not knowing the truth. I swallowed my fear at what it would mean when she saw the tattoo. That would have to be a conversation for another time.

She had been so kind as I’d taken her. At the very least, I’d expected her to mock me for my lack of experience. Instead, she’d guided me through the process, not laughing or growing impatient. As far as first times went, I think I’d managed to have one of the best. I shivered at the memory of the way she had felt beneath me. Gods, who knew that fucking could be so incredible? I almost laughed. Everyone knew that. I was just finally catching on.

I glanced at her sleeping face, enjoying the peace I found there, and the way her eyelashes rested on her cheeks and her full lips pouted slightly. Her breathing was easy, and her chest rose and fell steadily. She was beautiful. The most beautiful thing I’d ever seen, and already my body was making the physical connections to her I’d only heard described by other Tryonians. I’d never imagined I’d find someone like this for me, especially not with us scattered all over the galaxy and out into the reaches of who knows where. I had never considered I’d even be compatible with anyone outside of my own race.

As much as I knew I had to take her home, I also wanted to keep her. More than anything else I wanted her to be happy, and all of my conflicted feelings resulted in knowing her place was on Earth. Her place wasn’t with me, travelling around in a rusting ship, struggling to survive in the boundless depths of space.
