The next morning, I woke up early and took Tre to the center. Since it was summer, he was teaching one of the summer classes and still tutoring. Waking up at 8:00 in the morning was not some shit that I could get used to. I needed to hurry up and get Tre his permit or something so he could drive himself.

His birthday was a few weeks away, and he’d be old enough to get his license, but first, they make you go through a driver's program. I was gon’ do whatever it took to help him reach his goals. He took tutoring very seriously and looked at it like a job, so I made sure to get him there on time. Driving with my eyes damn near closed for almost an hour was the sacrifice I had to make.

“I know shit isn’t perfect or how you imagined life to be, but I want you to know that I’m here. As long as you want my help, I got you. All you have to focus on is being a kid, and I’ll help you figure out the rest. When you woke me up this morning to bring you to work, that shit made my day. You had a rough ass weekend, but you didn’t let that stop you from getting up and doing what you had to do. You one strong brother, Tre.”

“I appreciate you, Raheem. I have responsibilities, so no matter what I have going on, I’m going to do what I signed up to do. Plus, staying busy will keep my mind off things. I can’t afford to be missing no money either. You know girls be liking gifts. I can’t buy nothing if I’m broke,” Tre said as he stepped out of the car.

I was caught off guard and just stared at him while he laughed. I would have to find a way to tell him that being a trick was out of the picture. When a young girl found out that a boy had money, all they would do was try to milk him for everything he had. The begging really did start in high school. That’s where the females used to take my ass fast, especially once my uncle started putting money in my pocket.

As soon as I pulled off, I headed toward Tre’s house. It was early, and I hated to pull up on Norma unannounced. I just needed to talk to her and come to an understanding. I didn’t want shit to seem like I had just kidnapped her child and didn’t say anything.

When I pulled up to the house, I knocked several times, to no avail. After standing there like a fool, I used my spare key from when I had gotten the locks changed for her. It was dark as hell in there, but I could see a figure sitting in the recliner. I flicked on the lights, and Norma was in the chair, staring blankly into space. There were all kinds of liquor bottles scattered across the floor, and she looked as if she hadn’t slept in days.
