Peyton stepped out of the BMW and stared up at the beautiful townhouse on Park Avenue. It was the kind of neighborhood she’d only seen on TV, the kind of property her big sister mooned over in the New York Times.

“Miss?” The driver stood by the door with her bags, and the doorman held open the gold trimmed doors. He tipped his hat to her.

Taking a deep breath, Peyton walked through the entrance, trying to walk as confidently to the elevator as she could. The elevator operator took her bags and pressed the button for the penthouse. As the elevator rose and the floors zoomed by, Peyton felt her heart rate rise, as well. She was curious to see Thane’s home, but she was also afraid. Afraid that on being exposed to a type of luxury she’d never experienced, she’d embarrass herself painfully. Before she knew it, the doors opened and Thane stood in the center of an expansive, stunning hallway studying his phone.

“Welcome,” he said formally, tucking his phone into his back pocket. “This is Robert, my butler; he’ll take care of you from here. We’ll have dinner in the dining room at seven.”

Before Peyton could even respond, he strolled the length of the corridor and disappeared round the corner. She heard a door slam. She turned to Robert, who’d appeared as if from out of nowhere.

He wore a kindly smile, but looked nothing like what she expected a butler to look like. He was quite young to begin with, possibly in his early forties, with slightly greying hair and broad shoulders. He looked more like a retired boxer than a butler.

“Where did he go?” Peyton demanded, forgetting her intention to act as chic and cool as possible.

“Mr. Wainwright is working today.” Robert gestured towards the hallway. “May I take you to your room?”

Peyton nodded, trying to control her disappointment at Thane’s absence. She felt ridiculous wearing her most stylish jumpsuit and blazer. He hadn’t even noticed her.

When Robert led her down the hallway and into the living space, she gasped.

“Yes, it’s quite a view.” Robert casually pulled back the sheer curtain to further reveal the astonishing view of Central Park and the city over the terrace.

She then took time to survey the magnificent room. The ceiling was high and the windows flooded in the light. Down a few steps, in the center of the space, were plush looking leather sofas and soft cushions. The open stairs lay on the other side, a winding modern staircase leading upstairs. Peyton looked around at the large open kitchen on the raised floor on the other side of the staircase. It was all black granite and marble, sparkling in the light...overloaded with glittering machinery and gadgets. Peyton thought she spied a professional coffee maker.

“Mr. Wainwright’s study is through there, along with the library and conference room.” Robert pointed to a door behind them. “Upstairs...”

The upstairs hallway was brighter and whiter compared to the dark and lustrous furnishings of the dining room and living space.
