Chapter 17

Geneva knew she was ridiculous for wanting to return to the scene that was so deeply entrenched in her brain it might possibly never fade away, but she was going anyway. It wasn’t exactly the path she had taken that day weeks ago, but she felt confident she’d be able to find the corner marker she wanted.

The hammering and voices of the men faded as she strode along, again in her trusty hiking boots, and the birdsong became more pronounced. It was a beautiful place, the campground property, and she was happy they hadn’t gone with her first choice, Highland Lake. It was a valuable lesson, realizing Oliver and Ryan knew what was best. Maybe her title was consultant, but she knew, they all knew, she wasn’t going to be much use in the decision making. She felt confident she’d be able to outfit the cabins with the bare necessities, and would be able to offer suggestions as to the layouts of the store and the registration office. As to the apartment, she hoped she’d be deferring the plans to her parents, since they would be the ones living there.

Seeing the dirt road veer to the right ahead, she knew she was almost to the property line, and she stepped onto the pine needle covered ground and walked toward the lake, soon spotting the marker. It was silly to expect to see where her boots had disturbed the ground, and she didn’t. It had been weeks, and the wind and possible rain would have rearranged everything in the area.

It didn’t matter. She remembered it even without the visual. Taking her phone from her pocket again, she took a few photos. For old times’ sake. Then she continued along the road, seeing more cleared RV spaces on both sides, identifiable by the electricity hookups. She wondered what her grandfather would think of all this, and wished it had all been started when he could have seen it happen.

Making her way back to construction central, she took a few shots of the tent sites, which looked like nothing other than cleared land at this point, but she knew they’d have picnic tables and fireplaces by the time they were finished. She wished she had the skills to make the tables, and imagined how proud she’d be knowing she had been able to contribute at least something tangible to Pine Tree Lane.

Looking up, she saw Oliver approaching, his eyes on her. No scowl yet, but that could change at any time. “How hard is it to build a picnic table? The kind with the benches attached.”

He wished Geneva would stop disappearing. “Easy if you know how.” He realized from the look on her face he could have phrased his answer differently. “It’s too soon to be building those, but I’ll show you when it’s time.”

That was slightly more encouraging. “Isn’t there anything I can help with? There must be something even a rookie can do.”

“How much experience have you had with a nail gun? Not sheetrock walls.
