Chapter 24

I stepped into the hastily set up arena, feeling at peace. One way or another, this was about to be done. All they’d done was set up some metal frame cordons around a basketball court out the back of the town hall. The moon wasn’t even up yet, but the place was packed. No kids thankfully, but adults, some familiar, some not, they clustered around the barriers, only parting when we walked in. A strange quiet came over the place, the sounds of the evening birds filtering through.

“Get your muscles warm and loose,” Zack said, massaging my shoulders with both hands.

We’d gone back to the house and just spent some hours in the quiet of the big house, while Stevie ferried endless glasses of water and coffee over to us on the couch, unable to let go of the desire to serve. I nodded to Zack and then started the process I always used before a fight—stretch, visualise, then work up the requisite killer instinct to dominate a fight. This time, it just might be literally a killer instinct required. As I worked through my exercises, people chattering as I stretched, then shuffled around the ‘ring,’ throwing some light punches into the air around me, I felt the anticipation build. But I knew when my aunt had arrived by the silence falling over the space. I cocked my head, saw that Johnson had escorted Nance here again, but he was left behind the fence like everyone else when she stepped inside.

I snorted, looking her up and down. She was always going on about wearing what was appropriate for an event, but she’d obviously missed the memo for a fight to the death. She wore low pumps and a muted pink suit that looked like a Chanel knockoff. I just shook my head, a low titter going up around the crowd in response. Nance blanched at that but stepped into the centre of the ring, her arms crossed. It was then I knew how she was gonna play this.

She would do anything she could to prevent this from becoming a physical fight, because she knew she couldn’t beat me. If she could provoke me into smacking her down unprovoked, I’d lose the support of the town because she couldn’t have looked more vulnerable than she did right now. But in a battle of wills? That was where her strength lay. That was the battlefield where she wanted this fought.

I did something that would’ve made Zack curse, dropping my fists and walking up to her, standing face-to-face in what felt like the first time in ages. I inspected her face, the way her lipstick feathered, the lines around her eyes, the set of her jaw, the severely pulled back hair in a ponytail, and those eyes. I met her gaze head-on, without flinching or looking away, feeling her dominance batter at my consciousness. This was the start of the fight, it just hadn’t opened the way I’d thought. I felt her initial swipe at me, and I smiled.
