CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

I took a deep breath and wrinkled my nose, regretting that choice immediately. The jail cell reeked of body odor and stale cigarettes from all the people going in and out. I readjusted on the metal bench, stretching my aching back as I stared through the bars, watching officers do intake. The same thing I’d been doing for hours. I was in the holding cell, and since this jail had never been remodeled, the cells were all bars, which was a small comfort. At least I wasn’t stuck staring at a cement wall.

I’d learned early on that they weren’t going to put me in general population. Or even in solitary. Torres wanted eyes on me at all times. Which meant I was stuck in the holding cell for as long as he wanted. The desks where the officers sat were only about ten feet away, and I didn’t miss how one guy was staring at me every few minutes.

I was sure they also didn’t want me talking to other inmates who could help me in any way. There were no Grimrose or Disciples members in the holding cells. Not even in the men’s, which was right next to the women’s, where I was sitting.

My gaze roamed around the large cell again. I was in here with four other women. Two had been transferred here from prison for court hearings, and a third had been arrested for drunk driving. The fourth girl had been sleeping since I was shoved in here. She looked my age, and from how comfortably she was lounging on the bench across from me, I was guessing this wasn’t her first time here. She was still in civilian clothes, just like the woman with the DUI. But I’d been forced to put on a jail jumpsuit when I got here.

Jumping to my feet, I raised my arms over my head and stretched, letting out a small groan. The officer who had brought me here raised his head and glared at me from his desk. I ignored him and began walking around. I was already going stir-crazy in here.

The shock had worn off, and now I was just pissed. Torres had no idea what he’d done. I had everything lined up to get him out of this without a scratch. But that was off the table now. Ellie would keep going with her plan, and if I was stuck in here, she’d play dirty to help me. I had been helping Torres for Alicia. Ellie didn’t have the same commitment to her.

My eyes wandered toward the men’s cell, and panic stabbed me in the chest. I had no idea where Jace was. Did Torres just release him? I expected him to be brought here with me, but he never came through the front doors. Every time a new person came in, I was worried that I’d see Gage or Kian. If they tried coming after me, they’d end up behind bars. This jail was one of the most protected buildings in Little Haven.
