"You're doing what?!" Ophelia cried, when Amina gathered the family in the living room the next evening and told them about the engagement.

"I don't believe this." CJ whispered, his feelings were shared by almost everyone in the room.

"Y'all please, don't make this into something." Amina begged. "I'm not changing my mind." She told them all. Her eyes met Steph's and Amina smiled when her cousin nodded as if to say she understood and was sorry.

Silence settled over the room, but only lasted a moment before someone rapped the front door knocker.

"That's probably Tav." Amina announced, turning to pull open the heavy, maple door.

No one offered a smile or a kind word when Tavares Gwaltney walked inside the house. No one even looked up, when the boy offered his most enthusiastic greeting.

Tav's smile grew a bit less bright, but he was determined to keep the evening civil. "I know we surprised y'all with this, but me and Amina are happy you accepted me into the family."

CJ uttered a brief, humorless laugh. "No choice, man." he practically sneered, before leaving the room.

Stephanie followed.

"Tav, how do Minerva and Jason feel about this?" Chick asked.

Tav rubbed his palms together and nodded. "They seemed real happy about it last night. We even talked about the wedding plans for a little while. Didn't we, Amina?"

Ophelia leaned forward in the armchair she occupied. "What about college?"

"Oh, I'll still be going to Hampton in the fall, Mrs. Augustine." Tav promptly replied.

Ophelia frowned and her gaze briefly shifted from the couple to her husband. "Well what about Amina? She'll be in North Carolina. How can a new marriage survive distance like that?"

Tav sent his fiancée a strange look. Obviously, he was surprised by the tidbit of information. The fact didn't go unnoticed by Ophelia and Chick. Without further comment, they excused themselves from the living room.

"North Carolina’s out Amina." Tav coolly decided, once the Augustines had left the room.

Amina shrugged. "Fine." She coolly replied, though her hazel gaze was firm. "I don't have to go to North Carolina, but I am going to college. Nothing is gonna stop that."

Tav would have preferred Amina stay home and take care of him-the way his mother had done with his father. Before he could relay his feelings, bright lights flashed against the long cream drapes and the screen door. Amina jumped at the intrusion and went to see who the visitor was.

"What the hell?" Tav murmured when he saw Nikos Cantone pulling into the driveway.

"I'll be right back." Amina whispered, leaving her fiancé‚ standing in the doorway.

"Hey Girl." Nikos greeted, his gorgeous dark eyes thoroughly appraising, as they swept the cute, flowing light blue dress Amina wore. "You look nice." He complimented.

"Thanks." Amina sighed, her hazel stare shifting from Nikos to the front porch.

Nikos followed the movement and his expression grew murderous. "That Tav?" He whispered.

Amina nodded. "Mmm hmm."

Nikos shook his head. "He still trying to get you to fall for that proposal?"

Amina closed her eyes against the pain of her heart aching for Nikos.
