Chapter 11

The cold and dank cell was as inhospitable as Ivor had promised Lenny it would be, every time he had threatened to toss her into it.

Water dripped somewhere in the dark.

She listened, noting nothing else stirred, though she sensed eyes upon her and magic in the air. When she was certain the guards had left, she went through the motions of pretending to wake, doing her best to seem weak and mortal. In case she was indeed being watched, she blinked and glanced about, acting confused by what she saw. She rubbed her eyes and stood on shaky legs.

When she got to the bars of the cell, a man stepped from the shadows. As the dim light of the torches hit his face, she recoiled. “What are you doing?” she asked Landon as he walked to her. “Why am I here?”

“It’s a shame you’re the chosen one, really. I dare say I’d rather keep you for myself than offer you to Ryze. I don’t think he deserves you, Lenny.” Landon leaned against the bars, sticking his face through the bars.

“Why would you offer me to him? Why would you do anything with him? He’s evil and treacherous.” Lenny played along. “Don’t do this. Be better than your mother, Landon.”

“Saleen was a fool,” he spat his words at her through the iron bars.

“I meant Lorna,” she dared to admit her knowledge of at least that part of his story.

His eyes widened and flashed with confusion. “You know?” he whispered.

“I’ve known for some time.” She smirked, grateful for the moment to repay him the smug expression of having the upper hand in something.

“I’m to assume she’s dead then?” he asked and for the first time Lenny saw a hint of worry.

“She owed a debt.” Lenny walked closer to him, close enough that he might try to grab her. “And let’s just say, she paid it. In full.”

As expected, he reached in and Lenny took his arm, bending it the wrong way. “Let me out of here!”

He screamed in pain and the mage stepped from the shadows. She shot the arcane at Lenny again. Ilenia caught it, absorbing for a second time as Lenny did her best impression of a fish out of water.

“We’ll leave her here until he comes. She’ll be a perfect distraction for him,” Landon said scornfully. “Let’s find Ivor. There’s no way he left her here on her own.”

“She’ll sleep that stun off for a while anyway,” Alessandra cackled. Their footsteps faded in the darkness.

Lenny waited until she heard the familiar click of nails on the floor. She stood quickly and smiled when she saw Ivor and the hounds.

The joy lasted only a moment as guards were hot on his heels. Men shouted and Ivor pulled his sword. Lenny tried using magic on the lock, but it didn’t budge.

The shouts turned to the familiar clang of swords meeting. Panicking as more men flooded through the doorway, Lenny tried to blow up the doors by nothing happened.

She was about to be defeated when Ilenia lifted a finger to the lock.
