Chapter Seven

Carla woke up in her own bed the following morning, happy to see some weak sunlight filtering in through the curtains. She stretched her whole body to get rid of the ache she felt from laying on the couch for so long and stood up to get started with her day.

She pulled a robe around herself and headed down to get a cup of coffee, thankful that Kelly wouldn’t see her before she showered. When she turned the corner into the kitchen, she was surprised to see him sitting at the table instead of a note.

“Hey, you’re up and walking.” He smiled over his mug, and she reached up to smooth out her hair.

“You’re home.” She didn’t mean for it to come out as harsh as it did and walked over to the coffee maker so she could turn her back to Kelly and not see what his reaction was.

He laughed. “I am.”

His personality change was unsettling, and she nervously sat down next to him.

“Any fishing tours today?” She was desperate to make small talk and worried he would revert back to his grumpy self.

“Why are you so tense?” Kelly’s eyebrow raised.

“What? I’m not tense.” Carla wrapped her robe around her more tightly.

“I just reached for the creamer, and you jumped out of your skin.”

Carla shook her head, but Kelly was persistent.

Finally, she sighed when he wouldn’t stop looking at her for an explanation. “I’m tired of walking on eggshells. That’s how it was in my marriage, and I didn’t think it would be like that with my employer.”

“Oh.” Kelly looked down and studied his hand.

Carla blew on her coffee and wished she could take the words back. The last thing she wanted to do was make their situation even more uncomfortable, and that’s exactly what she had done.

Kelly finished his last drink and put his mug in the sink. “I’m off to finish some stuff up at the office. Lauren will be here tomorrow.” He looked around. “The house looks better than she’s ever seen it and you need rest, so don’t do anything today.”

With that, he was gone. Carla sat there with unspoken words on the tip of her tongue and a feeling of discomfort she hoped would go away soon.

As much as she wanted to tidy up, she knew Kelly was right. She headed upstairs and slipped into a hot bath, groaning as the warmth eased her aching muscles.
