Sophia watched Lord Robert Pemberley, her fiancé, leave as the magnitude of everything happening crashed down around her.

Lydia hugged her. “We have to get you packed. Not sure what all you will need for London, but you’ll need your very best frocks to be introduced to the Countess of Northwick and the Countess of Marquardt.

Sophie blinked at her, and Lydia took her hand and guided her upstairs. The body of the man who’d broken into her home was gone, though there were still dark stains on the rug and floor. Sophie tried to ignore them as she laid out a trunk and began packing what few things she had.

She pressed a hand to her stomach, grateful that there was nothing in it and that they were headed for London. She wasn’t certain she could sleep in her bed or in her room after all that happened.

As they packed, Lydia slid a glance toward Sophie. “Did he spend the night here last night? Is that why he was here to protect you?”

Color burned across Sophie’s cheeks.

“He did!” Lydia clapped her hands together. “And good thing for it or who knows what those brigands might have done.”

“He wasn’t here just to protect me.” Sophie stared down at her trunk as the color across her cheeks reached the tips of her ears.

“Oh, Sophie, about time. Hopefully he was skilled at it.”

Her blush deepened. “I am very much looking forward to doing it again.”

“I am glad. So very glad.” Lydia grinned, a mischievous expression that made her eyes sparkle. “And it sounds like he plans to marry you. Did he ask you?”

“He asked, and I said yes.”

Lydia clapped her hands together. “Oh, Sophie!”

Sophie blinked down at the trunk. “Everything is happening so fast. Too fast. Yesterday I was taking tea with Mrs. Walker and telling her how Lord Pemberley came to call and was always such a gentleman, and now this morning…”

Lydia hugged her. “Don’t you listen to the gossips. He’s the best thing that has happened to you. You should see the smile on your face when you talk about him. I am so happy for you, though I am going to miss you terribly.”

“I’m sure he’ll want to spend time with his family, but perhaps we can come back here in the summer. After everything, I don’t want to lose all the friends I’ve made here.”

“I think he would take you to the moon if you asked him. He’s just like in the stories you read, only better.”

“You don’t think…” Sophie started.

“What I think is you found a gentleman, a real gentleman, and you are in love with each other. Marry him and live happily-ever-after.”

“I don’t think it’s going to be that easy.” Sophie laid her stockings and stays into the trunk.

“It never is,” Lydia agreed. “But you can get close if you work at it.”

Sophie packed the few frocks she had into the trunk, including the one she wore to take tea with the dowagers. “Lord Pemberley never said he loved me.
