Chapter 9
âLet me get this straight,â said Lady Devon the next morning as she, Sage, Josefina, and Martine sat sewing in the ladies solar. Raven was there as well, still feeling ill. She didnât usually sew but was trying to learn the skill since sheâd soon be a mother. âMartine, you took ownership of the Cross Hare Inn?â
âFatherâs not going to like that,â said Raven, squinting and trying to thread a needle.
âNay, I donât suppose Corbett will,â said Devon, not sounding too concerned.
âI only did it so the Stone family wouldnât lose their home,â explained Martine. âIâm going to help them earn the rent money. By the time my father and Uncle Corbett return, Iâm sure David will be caught up with the rent and Iâll hand him back the deed.â
âWhy would you even do such a thing?â asked Devon.
âBecause, they helped us. Especially Sage. Iâm just returning the favor.â Martine saw the smiles on Josefina and Sageâs faces and knew they were going to spill her secret.
âSheâs sweet on the boy named David,â said Josefina.
âHeâs a man, not a boy,â Martine corrected her. âAnd Iâm not sweet on him. Not really.â She couldnât even look at the others. Neither could she focus on her sewing.
âGodâs teeth, Martine! I had no idea you had feelings for that innkeeper,â said Raven. âIt all makes sense now why you did what you did.â
âWe knew about it all along,â said Sage with a giggle.
âWhy am I always the last to know?â Raven gave up trying to thread the needle, tossing it into her sewing basket and then proceeding to retch into the basket afterwards. âOoooooh, why am I so ill? Sage, did you feel like this when you were pregnant?â
âNay, not at all,â said Sage sounding much too cheery for so early in the morning. âI have some herbs that will help you.â Sage put down her sewing and got up. âCome with me.â She held out her hand. âWeâll get the herbs and then go check in with the nursemaid to see little Martin. I miss him.â
âYou spent all morning with the baby,â said Josefina. âLet the nursemaid take him for a while so you can rest.â
âI have more energy when Iâm around my baby,â protested Sage. âYouâll all see what I mean as soon as you have children of your own.â
âI agree,â said Devon, focusing on her stitching. âBeing a mother is a wonderful thing.â
Once Sage and Raven left the room, Devon brought up the subject again of the inn. âMartine, wonât it be tiring traveling back and forth to the inn every day?â
âNot really,â said Martine, putting down her sewing. âItâs not that far away. If itâs bad weather, Iâll just⦠stay there overnight, I guess.â
âWhat?â Josefina gasped, pricking herself with a needle. âOuch,â she said, bringing her finger to her mouth. âIâm not good at this.â She put down the basket. Josefina was a merchant by trade and she and Sage and Rose had been trying their hardest to learn the skills of a noblewoman now that they were married to lords.
